The neighbour and I had to put down an injured deer on a hot summer day when I lived someways from town.. It'd been clipped by a passing vehicle as when it shook it's head the one horn moved somewhat, probably a fractured skull.
But no injuries other than that. It didn't flee when we approached it so obviously the lights were on but no-one was home.
A front shoulder hit with a slug from a 3" 12 gauge did the job. Looked somewhat like letting the air out of a balloon.
A 12 gauge is a pretty deadly piece of kit.
I've taken a few deer with a shotgun ( mind you a 12 ga 3" mag 36" bbl'd marlin goose gun is more formidable for this sort of thing than a Persuader ) and if used within about 70 yds they are very effiencent, bbl length considered of course.
