Well this took many months longer than I had hoped but it is finally done! I got my hands on a SR1911 and put it through the paces. As with my tanfoglio review it is pretty long but it also has lots of close up pictures and I think my writing has improved some :p

you can find the review here http://www.shooterready.ca/2013/05/13/ruger-sr1911-review-2/

Hoping to get my hands on a SAM next to complete the cheapish 1911 experience but would also like to do a review on the Grand Power Excalibur if someone can hook me up with one.

Looks good. If I like the norc I'm getting I've already decided on the Ruger for my "nice" 1911.

Thanks for the review......

It's funny.

I have one, I've put 1500 through it and I was just thinking today I should do a 1500 rnds with the SR1911 review......

That aside, it seems that we have different ideas about 1911s and comp guns...... About half of the things you point out in the review I was saying "what! No it isn't" in my head! lol!

In the end we have both come to the same conclusion...... Only I sold my spartan.....

If Ruger made the SR1911 in 9mm or .40 then I would have sold my Spartan as well.... Ok that's a lie but it would be my backup lol. I'll do a 13,000 round report on the Spartan this month though.

.45 just isn't practical for me to shoot though, to expensive for the rounds I go through and to much worrying about brass.

I'm picking up what you're laying down......

Seriously! You gotta start reloading! lol

There is absolutely no way I could shoot anything but .22lr if i didn't reload......

just reading the review - but from what i've been able to dig up, the mags aren't Tripp mags. they're made by CMI / CheckMate Industries. the mag body cuts are different, the baseplate is different, and the follower is different. so, they're not Tripp mags.

I actually prefer 7 round mags. Something about plastic sh1t hanging out of the bottom of my beautiful stainless and hardwood gripped SR1911, that also makes me "uncomfortable". ;)

So for everyone who has the Ruger 7 rounders and doesn't use them, I'll gladly take them off your hands!

Having had my personal Tripp mags in my hand along with the "Ruger" mags I can tell you they are exactly the same down to the patent number on the follower.

Then you have the 7rd Tripp mags? The Tripp mags that are so desirable use a hybrid follower which isn't at all like the metal one on the Ruger's mag.

Or did you buy the gun used and the previous owner swapped followers??

The mags are exactly what came with the gun, its a friends who bought it new and it only had 100 rounds through it before I got my hands on it. Tripp does make an all metal follower, it's on all their mags except the ones that you are looking at. Seen here on a .45 mag

The Ruger mag is that follower in the government length body.

I was scurrying around trying to retain all my .45 brass. I got 178/200, no brass catcher. Even with the netting between stations this thing was chucking brass a good 12 feet sometimes. I'm thinking of getting one of those brass catchers in an ammo can dealies. Anyone use them?

Any problems running other bullet profiles than the standard round nose ball? I'll be casting some .452 lead bullets and was wondering if a wad-cutter, semi-wad cutter or truncated cone works ok in these pistols.

I as well was really impressed with the mags.
