Long Range Challenge/09 Edm/alta *Updated with Entry Form in post #14*

well after talking with the other shoot organizers we have decided it will stay a RUN WHAT YOU BRUNG shoot and we will not be splitting up catagorys. the reasons for this is that there is more custom/semi custom rifles than factory rifles. and as i said before a factory 308 isnt the same as a custom 308. as is the same in any caliber. so if anyone wants to change the caliber they put on there entrance form please pm me and i will change it. keep in mind it must stay within the caliber restrictions. ALSO i just aquired a huge amount of plate steel and will be making a set of thicker targets so we should be able to run larger caliber rifles for next years shoot.

THE 2009 ALBERTA LONG RANGE CHALLENGE IS NOW FULL
on may 15/16/17 2009 60 shooters from all over alberta/bc/sask will make the way down to gennesse range to see what team will be crowned LONG RANGE CHAMPIONS/09.
we ask all teams get there entry fee/forms in ASAP and we will post all sponsors and prizes by march1/09. we thank all teams that have entered and are looking forward to shooting against and meeting all of you. thankyou

Dave......according Mutt's first post you guys are only shooting out to 700m. I can't see how the 308 would be at a disadvantage over any other cartridge allowed. Now if you guys were shooting out to 1200+ yards....I could see your point.

It sounds to me like you've never been to this shoot. A high BC bullet travelling much faster then an average BC bullet is not going to be affected nearly as much even at 500yds let alone 700yds. That's why there are favorite calibers for long range competitions. That's also why you can't take a 300WM or a 260AI or 6.5x284 to the BCRA matches. When you restict the caliber choices, whether or not the same bullet flys another 100-150ft/sec quicker or not really doesn't make that big a difference which pretty much keeps everyone on a level playing field.

I personally think that if guys want to bring bigger boomers and other hybrids, they should know going in that every time they make a hit on the steel it doesn't count as much as someone running a caliber that isn't deemed a hybrid or Magnum or else let the 338LMs into the match as well. I know the rational behind not letting 338s in mainly because of the damage done to the gongs but that aside, I'm 100% positive I wouldn't have to adjust for any wind out to 500yds and I could probably hold over an inch or so out to
700yds purely because of power and speed alone.

i can make a different scoring for hybrid guns but the classes of rifle would go like this.

HYBRIDS-300wm/7mm/6.5-285/280ai/260ai and 6mm(any gun with a custom action or custom barrel)

FACTORY RIFLES- any gun with a stock action and stock barrel( also note your gun must shoot under 2650fps

tell me how it would be fair for a guy to shoot a 308 with 168gr bullets going 2600fps to shoot in the same class as a guy pushing 175 or 190gr bullets at 2900fps like some custom 308's

i shot a 308 in the first 2 shoots we put on and was able to beat shooters shooting 300wm and 338's. i think what is going to win the shoot will be a team that works well toghether and is able to read the conditions and can capatilize on second round hits when a miss is made.

SO LETS HEAR IT FROM ALL THE TEAMS ENTERED DO YOU GUYS WANT TO SEE TWO CLASSES HYBRIDS AND FACTORY RIFLES. POST WHAT YOU THINK SO I HAVE TIME TO WORK IT OUT

we will be doing trophies for top 3 teams and also top scores for individual shooters in each round for both hybrids and factory. so even if your partner craps the bed you will have a chance to win a trophy. KEEP IN MIND 75% OF TEAMS ENTERED ARE SHOOTING HYBRID OR CUSTOM RIFLES.

Leave it like it is Mutt. We all know that as long as we input thr right data, most of the rifles there will hit what they are suppose to. Again I am thinking it is going to come down to knowing your gun, what it does, and the conditions. I am fine with the way it is. After last years shoot I could go through the shoot and point out the area's where I screwed the pooch and how I should have corrected for it.

I think it should be "run what ya brung".. Maybe in the future do two different shoots.. one for factory and one for custom.. but for this one let em all hang out..

I'll be shooting a factory Savage 10 FCP with the Mcmillan stock. I don't feel out matched due to the gun.. My limited experience is a much greater handicap.

No Troy......I haven't been to the shoot. I have enough time on my own private range shooting beside magnums and non-magnums to know that if you can't read the conditions it doesn't matter what calibre or cartridge you're using. A correction is a correction...no matter how much. Thanks for educating me and the rest of us on this though.

That's also why you can't take a 300WM or a 260AI or 6.5x284 to the BCRA matches.

You can take any of those calibers to the BCRA as far as I know, you will just be in the Open class.

If I remember correctly though the guys shooting in the open class did not do nearly as well as the guys shooting .308's. I think the closest team came in 18th place over all out of 29 teams.

To me, the most important thing is to shoot consistent and be able to use any missed shots to guide the next shots onto the target.

My partner will be shooting a .308 in this match and to be honest It's almost a good thing for me cause in most conditions I can watch the bullet path and it's easier to put him on the target even if he does miss the first shot. With the 6.5/284 he shot at the last shoot I couldn't see the bullet path at all and we would loose 2 or 3 shots at times just finding out where we were.

The guys behind the guns will make the difference, not the guns!

I think we should leave it the way it is. Like mentioned earlier it all come down to the person behind the rifle. You could have the best and most expensive gun money can buy, but if you do not spend the time behind the gun and know how it shoots you will not win weather it is custom or factory.

Although I won't be going to this shoot I'll throw in my 2 cents for what it's worth.

A very good shooter with a .308 will beat a mediocre shooter running any gun on most days.

A very good shooter shooting one of the more advantaged guns will most likely beat a very good shooter running a .308

That being said if you are going to divide it into classes look to the BCRA and have a .308/.223 class and then an open class with a calibre restriction so you don't kick the crap out of your steel.

There has to be a line somewhere to prevent things from becoming an equipment competition versus a shooting competition.

I shoot .223, .308, 260AI and .338 Lapua. I find that the last two allow me a little more "wiggle" room at distance, but I have fired so many more thousands of .308 rounds down range I know the gun better and shoot it better, especially in positional type shooting.

leave well enough alone....1 catagory. after being there i can say without a doubt that there was some pretty expensive rifles on the bottom half of the scorecard, so unlike pro sports in this case money doesn't neccesarily buy the trophy.
