What is the longest range you guys realistically shoot targets with your .22's? My Norc does about 1 MOA, so it should be accurate enough, but I just don't know at what range drop and wind become so much of an issue that it ain't practical.

I'm not a great shot!
I find it good fun at 100. When I shoot at 200, it's for fun. There are 200yd gopher shooters on here (size of a squirrel...). If conditions are consistant (NOT gusty) and, you "set up" for it, I'll bet fun could be had out to 300 (for me, "set up" will be a full year shooting everyday!!!)
... I'd like to think, fancy schmancy ammo, good gun n' great shooter would make 'em sing way out there!

On "this note", when I first joined, there was a thread about a fella who could
"Shoot fist sized holes at 300 with open sights, out of the box"

Among the many replies (including the mention of the stickied ballistic charts above) was (not an actual quote...from memory) "That's nothing. I shoot squirrels at 1000yds(?) but, time the shots so I don't waste eyelid meat"

...one of my favourties ever!

I've shot gongs at 200 and 300yds. with my Martini .22 with tang Peep sights, and once you have the sight settings it's a lot of fun unless you change ammo, then you have to start again!

iv got my savage mkII TRR-SR zeroed at 100, but more often then no find my self shooing a 6" gong at 200 and have about a 80% hit on the same gong at 300yds. im sure useing a better quality ammo (mini mags or somthng) would bring the hit ratio up, but for consistantsy at 300 a nice calm day is needed..

FWIW- i need about 30MOA dialed up from my zero to make it out to 300

To me there are two levels of shooting with the 22: out to 80 yards and beyond 80 yards. Rounds go subsonic at around 80 yards and that's where they start to show significant drop and the effect of wind. I shoot at 100 yards a fair amount and have just started shooting 200. Plan to keep going farther. I have a 12 going which is no challenge at 100 yards so I moved it to 200. Next time out I'll go farther.

My Dlask 10/22 happily shoots out to 215m, which is the butts of our range with Winchester Xepert in 40gr. I need a longer range to see how far I can go with decent accuracy.

So what is the best 22LR ammo for shooting long range?
There can be many many right answers for this question. You have to actually try out differing brands in your firearm and find that out for yourself.

Ammunition with accuracy reputation is a better question IMO:

CentreX
Eley Tenex (black and red box)
SK Standard Plus
Many Lapua brands
etc
etc
etc....

Edit: I even had better success with regular Winchester Power Point than Federal Gold Medal Match for some odd reason with the BSA.

it will dpepnd on what your rifle likes the most, differnt weight / brands / velocities will shoot differently, its goning to be a fine line between velocity and accuracy.. so the fastest bullit u can push accuratly will be the best..

in my MK 2 i get great results with cci blazer for just plinking, and cci minimags really bring the accuracy up, but cost about 40% more

My BSA Martini likes the expensive stuff best Tenex and Lapua, the best gopher load is the CCI segmented hollow pt., but thats only good to about 60yds. for me.

I have shot several 5 shot groups at 200 meters that are less than 1", center to center of widest shots.
[Suhl & 40X rimfires, using Eley Match EPS (Black) or Lapua Center-X.]
Best ammo at long range is generally the same as your best ammo at 50 & 100 m.
The main thing for successful long range shooting with the 22 long rifle round is CALM conditions.
I usually shoot at long range early in the AM, when it is still.

I have heard it said that a .22 shooting at 300 yards has a similar ballistic profile when compared to a .308 shooting at 1000 yards.

I can reliably hit my 10" gong with my .22 out to 200 yards and, depending on the wind, fairly consistently out to 300. I haven't tried it farther than that.... yet. :)

me old mossy 144lsb has a very good record of 200 yards plus with 333é555 Winchester ammo. no targets per say but standing gophers. Also have done some 200 yard shooting with my Marlin 81.
