I was reading a post in another forum that was talking about a long range shooting course run out of Wyoming. It cost about $900 for 4 days and included food and shelter. Apparently they covered everything to do with shooting up to 1000yds and had a sniper-ish feel to it (I guess that could equate to hunting as a practical application).

Just wondering if there is anything like that in B.C. or Alberta? Doesn't have to include food and shelter, it could even be a bunch of CGNers getting together to share information but I would be interested in taking such a course.

We are planning both an intermediate level precision shooting clinic as well as a long-distance workshop (up to 900M) for after the completion of our 900M fullbore range in Kamloops. Look for these in the next year.

The best learnings are from trigger time - some of your best practice can come from shooting F-Class matches.

In addition to the cost of the course you should probably allow for 100-150 rounds per day for the duration of the course. Hopefully, the course you choose is more shooting and less on subjects which relate to sniping. Sniping is 10% shooting and 90% other stuff not related to shooting. You might be signing up for what you think is a long range shooting course but spend all your time learning to: find or make hides, camouflage, learning to move undetected while under direct observation, communication with your spotter, KIMS, map reading, exploitation of terrain, natural lines of drift as it pertains to terrain, man tracking, offensive and defensive tactics, police vs military scenarios, what happens when you shoot through glass, disabling vehicles with rifle fire, choosing high value targets, etc. These things are all very interesting, but are they what you want to spend you money on if you are looking for a long range marksmanship course? I'd sign up with Obtunded rather than choosing a quasi sniper course.

I would be all over this like a fat kid in a ice cream shop. Hopefully I could get my rifle together by that time.

$900 for 4 days just aint gonna happen for me, but if some non-commercial (as opposed to a full-blown shooting school) enthuesiasts put on a course, I would love to take part.

There is so much that goes into long distance precision shooting. Once you get past 500M - even on a good day - you are completely at the mercy of your ability to read conditions such as wind and mirage.

Furthermore, you simply must have an accurate rifle with an accurate and tuned load otherwise, you ability to hit a target is mostly chance.

Knowing what your rifle is capable of doing is a huge part of the battle and that takes practice. Using "Mules" and watching the results of their shots fall compared to conditions you observe are all techniques for bettering long distance shooting and that you can do any time.

For a shooting course with a tacticool feel to it, I don't know that there's much like that offered in Canada (maybe Milcun?).
FClass is straight prone shooting (which is fun too), but I'm interested in moving targets, alternate positions, unknown distances, low light, shooting with a minimum of gear and a practical rifle (ie- no 30" stainless and no rempel bipod lol). :D
No worries to the guys who shoot with that, plenty of room for us both. I may even hit some FClass matches again this year, and have the 6br guys kill me (again) and my comparatively basic 308. As said, any practice is good, and wind/mirage practice is the big thing.

The courses I was looking at are from riflesonly.com in Texas. Spoken quite highly of on SH. $800usd-ish/5 days plus ammo and travel, call it a vacation.

Have a look at these guys. It is much cheaper, the instructors are top notch, great ranges. It's in the middle of nowhere but it was my best vacation ever!

I did long range tactical shooting and sniper I (back to back).

Note: the site only works with IE...

A good, professionally done course ought to teach you more in a day than you can figure out on your own, but it'll cost you anywhere from $200-$1000 a day (so your $900 for 4 days was actually on the cheap side!!). It's the fastest way to learn the basics, but probably not the most cost effective. There's nothing that a pro course will teach you about shooting that you can't learn on your own; their only advantage is that they are quicker.

If you're looking for the most cost effective way to learn long range shooting, the way to do it is to take up long range shooting with your provincial fullbore rifle association - basically, "learn by doing". The BC Rifle Association shoots on a 600m range in Chilliwack, the Alberta Provincial Rifle Association has a 900m range at Homestead.

And if you happen to end up enjoying competitive rifle shooting and take it up seriously, after a few years of it you will end up knowing more than the vast majority of the professional shooters out there.

Thanks for the replies guys. I read em all but won't touch on all of em. Yeah, I would like to learn some sniper-ish stuff like unknown distances, shooting on inclines, quick follow up shots and stuff like that, you know, stuff that applies to hunting and random long distance shots, but I'm not all that interested in bush craft and stalking people and all that junk. I don't intend on playing rambo.

Any idea what it'll cost? Kamloops is nice and close so I could certainly see myself attending! :D

Our clinics are generally run by volunteers and we charge enough to cover wear and tear on targets/frames etc. We aren't there to gouge anyone.

You should get involved in club-level F-Class shooting. Kamloops and Mission both have weekly drop-in informal practices. You will learn tons from the fellows that show up to these sessions. These are the guys that actually shoot and compete at long distances.

Not that this will be of use to Wally in BC, but this weekend there will be what is effectively a long range shooting course held in NB. I have confirmed that we will be joined by shooters from western Quebec (driving 1000km!), PEI, and Nova Scotia.

Here's a blurb: ANNOUNCEMENT: "Circle Training" event Sat 6-June

This will be the premier training event on the Royal NB Rifle Association's calendar this year. If you are within driving range, and if you're serious about shooting, give it some thought (but remember to RSVP!!)

Perhaps we're making a mistake by charging $10 for this. Maybe if we priced it at $500/day we might better communicate that this is a *REAL* learning opportunity for long range shooting.....? ;-)
