Hi guys,

I know you Milsurp guys are knowledgeable. Here is my question:

I love big guns, my SVT is the longest but not long enough. Which military rifle is the longest? (other than anti-tank guns? :))

Michael

Meh - the Mosin M91/30 is a Carbine isn't it? ;)

My longest is my Swedish Rolling block at 53 1/2". Honourable mention goes to the Dutch Beaumont and Mauser 71/84 at about an inch shorter.

A Snider Enfield is the longest one in my collection. Good thing it's an antique, it doesn't fit in the safe! Quite a bit longer than my M91!

Ross rifle MkIII, have to empty the safe to put it into the safe and remove it, then angle it perfectly.

I suspect it's bayo is shorter than the MN 91/30 so it would be close to see which one is ultimately longer with bayo mounted... I think ross.

The longest I have got is;
M1863 Springfield rifled Musket, with Bayonet.
Not sure of OAL, but the ceiling has numerous bayonet stabs from accidentally lifting it vertically rather then horizontally.

Uhh, now that you mention ceilings, I once got my 91/30 stuck in the door frame of my last bedroom. I was gingerly carrying it after getting the bayo stuck on & it slipped out of my hand. Not wanting to have it fall down the stairs & possibly stab the dog, I overcompensated & with a mighty heave neatly impaled it in the frame. Amazing how easily those mosin bayos penetrate 90yr old pine.

Ahhhh, the good old days, hot lead followed by cold steel!:D

X2

1867 Enfield

Have you got a bayo for yours? I imagine they must be about 9 feet long with the pigsticker attatched, a reflection of the tactics of the time. Your rifle with bayo was to be long enough to use as a pike in close quarters, with one rank of men in front of you. They were also made that long so that the muzzles of the guys in the back row protuded past the faces of the men in the front row. Most definately longer than even an M91 by a good stretch!

Anyone have a Snider bayonet they want to sell:D

My Snider and bayonet is about six feet overall. My Martini-Henry is about six inches shorter, but the bayonet is longer so it is also about six feet long overall.

You will find that six feet or so is a fairly constant overall length with bayonet attached for most late 19th and early 20th century military rifles. It was believed at the time, that this was the minimum overall lenght required to deal with cavalry. When the "short rifle" concept came into being (SMLE, Springfield etc) the bayonet got longer to compensate. Compare a long Lee-Enfield bayonet with the 1907 SMLE bayonet for example.

"Prepare to receive Cavalry!":D

I have at the "Toejhus Museum", Copenhagen, seen muzzle loading rifles with barrels which were about 3-4 meters en lenght. Also during the "Boxer Rebellion", I have seen pictures of chinese soldiers who used that kind of long barreled muzzle loaders against western and japanese forces.
