Look what i found!

I am trying to figure out what moose are supposed to do if you use a 30-30 to shoot one. Moose are actually an easyier kill then other game animals. I have seen more game wounded with a magnum rifle then a regular caliber. Mostly because guys are so scared of the thing they close their eyes when they pull the trigger due to the kick they got when they sighted it in.

^. This.

That is why I have down loaded to a .30/06 and a SMLE in .303 Brit. Got tired of the expensive shells from the 300 win mag. Nice gun by the SMLE is better built than my styer Mann was. I have chased several of my fathers elk because of his 7mm rem mag. We finally got him to look smaller and guess what he bought. A 25/06. I guess he likes his speed. I seem to prefer slower harder hitting stuff.

Nothing better than the old stuff IMHO.

A lot of guys can't seem to figure out that all the power in the world doesn't do any good if you don't stick the bullet in the right spot. In my grandfathers day a .30/06 was considered a "big rifle" and WAY to much gun for deer. I remember him telling me about a local guy who bought a .250/3000 back in the 1930's in rural New Brunswick. This was in the days of "meat hunters" and he was tormented unmercifully about his needle gun. First season the guy killed nine deer and a moose with eleven shells. The naysayers didn't have much to say after that. Of course these guys could shoot and were really good woods hunters as well.

my first rifle was a 30/30 marlin, that i still have today i have taken at least a dozen moose with it over the years.I dont use it much anymore as i favour the much more powerful 300 win mag for its greater hitting power and long range capibility. As was mentioned previousley in this thread the larger caliber rifles have a recoil that takes some getting used to.The 30.06 is the perfect moose gun in my opinion lots of power and middle of the road when it comes to recoil

Out here in Alberta farm country you need to reach out a ways. The 7mm Rem Mag was the ticket when i was growing up. They were considered expensive rifles then and kind of exotic. So that is what I have now and I am not sorry. I have killed deer with everything from a 22-250 to 375 H&H, I have killed cattle with a 22 long rifle. Hit right they all fall down.

.303 brit as enough power out to 300 yards

303 Brit has done a lot of 1-shot kills out here at ranges up to 600.

You just have to know how to shoot.

Old fellow I knew (I carried his casket, 25 years ago) fed his family through the Depression on what he hunted, He had a Remington 14 pump rifle in .25 Remington. Out of 1 box of shells, he sighted the rifle, got 17 animals and 1 round left over. I have the box with his empties. Uncle Eddie Schmaus could HUNT. Most of that was in bush country; whitetail were very new here. Worked fine on Moose, too.

joking about what? when it comes to a damn moose, i know guys that have hunted them, and theyve told me yeah the 30-30 can get the job done, but i think id take my 7mm ive seen the destruction power of that thing, thats why i dont use it for deer anymore

This reply to H4831's post shows that W.30-30 is more afraid of a moose than he is to ruining a lot of game, far better, IMHO than deer.
