Hey guys. I'm gonna get some back pay from work soon and am looking into getting anew toy. I recently posted another question asking people for recommendations however I never included the AR in that list. Originally I wanted to stay clear of restricted weapons, however I feel a change of heart coming along.

Anyways, I'm looking for any suggestions on an entry level AR. Something for under 1000$.. I was looking into that LEO deal on the S&W mp15 sport until I realized that the upper has no forward assist or dust cover (a deal breaker for me). So, other than the DA or Norinco (not interested in either), anyone have any suggestions on an AR for just under 1k$?

Thanks

I don't think you'll see much difference in the ARs in the under 1K price range. They will all be bottom shelf with no bells or whistles. I know you said no Norinco, but they come with a forward assist and a dust cover... Though I haven't needed either. I don't shoot in adverse conditions though.

I just went through all of this myself, being new to the AR market, and I've been researching it like crazy for a year.

I understand that budgets just can't be thrown out the window, but I think you are doing yourself a disservice by spending less than $1000 on an AR, because so many of them are using shortcuts throughout the entire rifle.

GunTests.com just did a comparison of budget ARs, and Armalite won the comparison, but then in the write-in sessions in the following months, readers bashed pretty much every AR they tested for X, Y, and Z reasons.

I strongly recommend that if there is any way you can pull it off, spend $1500 instead of $1000, and you can get yourself a Daniel Defense AR, which are at the top of the recommended list, as well as having a great reputation for being MilSpec+. IMO, they are the best gas system you can buy, and it's not until you get to a pistol system like a $4000 H&K when you may get "better".

I am willing to spend more to get better, but not to the point of throwing money away on diminishing returns. So I'll spend $1000 on a scope instead of $100, but I won't spend $5000. Same with the DD, it is worth it to pay more to get something that is better in practically every way than a budget AR.

I agree that spending 1500$ for a Daniel defence would be a great idea, but at that point, I might as well spend more time and save for a non restricted such as XCR. What got me thinking about an AR was the LEO deal on that smith and Wesson. It seemed like a decent rifle for the price, and I really like the fact of getting into a tactical weapon for such a decent price.

If you're willing to spend more to get a non-restricted tactical rifle, what about a Benelli MR1?

Another vote for Core15. No complaints about mine even though I only have about 200-300rds through her. If the 5 free pmags deal is still on, it's within 2-3% of your budget. Armalite isn't a bad option either. The only reason I chose Core15 is because it's a lot lighter, which is better for my needs, but most shooters would prefer the heavier barrel that comes on the Armalites.

Trust me spend a little more and just get a Daniel Defense. At that price range you do get a lot of bang for the buck.

I went from Windham to a DD and it was a big jump in the rifle you are getting. Chances you will end up adding parts to a lower priced one and end up spend the same or more.

I now own a knights/LMT build but the jump is not as significant. There are lots of nice DD on EE right now. Wheel and deal you might beable to score a good used one for around 1200-1300.

I saw the core15. Looks pretty decent. Have you guys ever fondled a NEA rifle or a DPMS panther?

I own an NEA that is pretty sweet! Love the gun. It doesn't have a forward assist and I took the dust cover off. I has be flawless for me. Not a single FTF and I run a pile of rounds through it.

+1

I looked at a ton before buying 2 DD's (got a little too excited, need to sell one, let me know if you're interested)

looked at Windham, Colt, Bushmaster but settled on DD... build quality and feels and looks better and I think the value is outstanding when you consider what you get

Good:
DD, LMT, KAC, Colt or Noveske.

Bad:
NEA, Norc, WW, Olympic

Buy cheap, buy twice. And remember, buying a higher quality gun will make it easier to sell if you decide you don't like it.

The use will be paper and steel targets. No competition

Then you don't " need " a forward assist or dust cover. Keep an eye on the EE. Lots of good deals as previously mentioned. Friend of mines got a DD and it runs great.

Stag makes a great product too. The boys at arms east ( site sponser ) will take good care of you.

Good luck and happy shooting.
