Looking at/for a cheap 9mm

Consider the Jericho 941. A little above your price range, but well worth it.

Jericho my be a little overbuilt for a 9mm, but if you like a heavier pistol, it's a great one. It also comes in polymer.

You can get a Norinco(Np29) 1911 in 9mm for the same price as the NP22. It's a favourite of mine.

Why not let your wife and daughter pick the gun. Then they are invested in the decision and maybe they'll be more interested in shooting.

i'd go with this too, and if there is an opportunity to try it at the range do that. my wife didn't like the 9mm I had and tried a glock 17 gen4 with the small grip size and liked that one a lot better (bonus, got another gun). you may also find they don't like the recoil. my wife has carpel in the hands and can only shoot it so long before going to the .22

Lots of Walther deals. $499 for the range kits at site sponsors like Tenda.

This is what I just ordered as a first handgun. Was caught up between this (Walter PPX) and the S&W M&P 9. Ended up going with the PPX due to the price, and also Tenda didn't have any M&P 9's in stock and my LGS had them for $120 more than what Tenda had them listed at. At first I was going to go with a TT33 or a Star Model B 1911 9mm but later decided something surplus shouldn't be my first purchase. I was also pretty tempted at getting a Beretta 92s or a 92fs, but the price was holding me back.

I bought the Walther PPX range kit from Tenda a few weeks ago for a great price just above $400. It was nearly new after 100 shots. It came with a Walther carrying case, 3 mags, holster and mag holster (2 mags). The pistol makes a very good impression of a solid quality. I had two shooting sessions with my PPX and it's a very nice shooter with a great trigger pull. IMHO the PPX is better than the M&P9.

To me PPX seem really bulky and kinda over inflated size wise.. not my type of thing personally. Had several Norinco's and they were OK esp when anything else was double the price and more, but now there's more options.

SV9 that I dry fired seemed like a decent little gun. Id take it over the Norinco for sure. I'll second Girsan Beretta copy, great deal in $400range used.

I saw a 92FS on the EE (along with a bunch of Toks) for under $600 IIRC. I picked up mine at the LGS for the same price with a few mags and a box of ammo. Going to shoot it for the first time this weekend, hopefully.

Congrats...that sounds like a great deal....I'm waiting for one to arrive...let us know how you like it...

I'll definitely post a thread about it with photos of my hopefully not embarrassing target results. I even picked up some "Hostage" targets so I can shout out one liners from CounterStrike.

Regarding the PPX it's just a visual impression that it's bulky. Not at all. It fits my hands like a glove. Owing to a polymer composite frame it's quite light. Fact of the matter, it fits the bigger hands better. Recoil is very much suppressed. For the price I paid for the kit, there is no better deal.
The PPX is one of the easiest pistols for field stripping. It takes like 10 seconds or so to disassemble it.

I wasn't talking about the grip size. the slide is fat and height is HUGE (rail to top of slide and beavertail to rights). Also the grip itself looks kinda awkwardly too far push inside the gun. just reminds me of Hi Power too much.

For a cheap, solid steel 9mm pistol, the Star model B is hard to beat. At $250 on the EE with 2 magazines, mine keeps up with most of my much more expensive guns, is solid and a bit heavy, so it soaks up the recoil of the 9mm round nicely. I see that several sponsors still offer them for under $300 (plus shipping and tax) ... so a bargain, whether from the EE or a dealer. Mine has been totally reliable with every type of ammunition I have fed it. It won't replace the SIGs and Glocks and Walthers and such, but in their absence, and for a tiny fraction of their cost, it's a great pistol. 1911 style, with no grip safety. I only bought mine to see if the barrel might work in my Star BM, a more compact (prohib/fun) version. Nope, not even with a machine shop at your elbow.

Best bet to get them going without getting turned off would be a 22

Another option would be a 38 revolver with light loads

Or a .380 if you want something more than a 22, same bullet size as 9mm but lighter recoil.

Too bad .25 acp and .32 acp aren't options anymore...

I can only recommend looking at a 22. In the OP's original statement there are a few key points. Inexpensive and learning to shoot for more than one person. The OP himself admits that he is not much of a handgun guy, not owning one himself. A decent quality used 22 (Ruger, Buckmark, High Standard S&W etc) can be had for less than $400 and pretty much be as good as new. Also, not currently owning one, I am not sure if you appreciate how fast you go through ammo with a handgun compared to a rifle or shotgun. If the three of you head out to the range for some quality practice, you can easily go through 200 rds in less than an hour (way less). Even cheap 9mm ammo will cost about 10 times what .22LR will.

If you want to keep the cost to a reasonable amount (at least until you know if it is for you) and you are looking to learn/train proper gun handling and marksmanship, a 22 is the way to go. There is always time and means to "up gun" in the future.

If you dont straightened up your wife up front, you will be forced to obey rules like that, what concern my wife it's her prerogative, what are my business is my prerogative, the faster you put order in that situation will see you and you wife just be in peace with any possible disagrement... JP.

Well, I guess it is a give and take. The final result was better than I expected. I am getting my Ruger Mark III .22lr in mail, and already have a used CZ75b at the range (waiting for ATT to bring it home).
