Looking for a 45 - can you help me?

I love both the Sig and Glock platforms (I have each one, just in 9mm), with specific love to my G34. I keep telling myself to go down that route cause if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but I also just need a new love in my life lol.

I'm going to take everyone's advice and give them all a go. I'm going to do a little bit more research into 1911s as well, as shamefully, I don't know too much about them.

Question: Theres been some mention of STIs on this thread - are they one of the best 1911s? I've heard of Wilson combat, Kimber, I know Sigs make them...so my question is which 1911s should I be looking at in 1500-2000$ range ( I know not Wilson for sure :p )? Thanks for your continued help!!

If you can muster a little more scratch look at NightHawk for 1911's

Unless you are buying used, $2K is still out of the premium 1911s.

In the 1500-2000 range, STIs are definitely some of the best. The Sentry, Rangemaster (at the top of that range), and the Trojan (bottom of that range) are all fantastics, competition oriented guns. The STIs in that range are probably were I would look but I am not that familiar with (or interested in) the Smith & Wessons, Sigs and Kimbers in that range. The other option in the range is the Colt (Gold Cup, National Match). They are very nice as well.

From the looks of it, the Nighthawks start at 3500 USD. Is it really that much better than a Colt Rail Gun, for example, and if so, why the sizeable difference in price? Sorry for the ignorance, just don't know much about their products and work - going to do some research now.

When you shoot these custom 1911, you will see and feel the difference, for some gentleman, it's to much money for small differences, for some others those little differences are well worth the higher price...
Once you are in the custom 1911 line...
Nothing else will replace it, except maybe another 1911 custom... JP.

For the same price, would you say STIs or Colts are better? Or are they not comparable - aka Colt more of a go-to-war gun, and STI more of a race gun?

Guns are a bit like wines, whiskeys, cigars etc. "Better" is going to be subjective to only those who appreciate the differences. I'll use a whiskey analogy; is Johnny Walker Blue label better than Black and White scotch? Why, they're both blended whiskeys...the answer lies in the care taken in the blending of single malts and the base quality of those single malts. A 1911 is not the same as another 1911 in the same token. They may both fire .45acp, they may both be equally accurate, but it is the care that the maker takes in it's fitment and the quality of the parts that set one apart from another.

I believe that north of say $2,500 cnd (our dollar has moved boys) for a 1911, the similarities between the 1911's are more numerous than their differences...like fine whiskey, it will be subjective to your tastes. Anyone who tells you a NightHawk shoots better than a (insert quality name brand here) doesn't know what he's talking about. Like whiskey, it is up to you to understand/educate yourself as to what makes up the whiskey/gun and understand what you like v what you don't.

Another example, NightHawk T3 carry...wonderful commander, it is checkered in all the places I want a 1911 to be checkered, but we're in Canada and I don't carry so why spend $4,000 for a titanium framed 1911 to only carry at the range? I can't justify it to myself. Personally, I don't like ambi safeties, front slide serrations, oversized controls or external extractors on a 1911. So for me they are out regardless of the price, I won't pay for something I don't like...trick is getting enough experience to understand for yourself what you like and what you don't. And no one can help you there. YMMV.
