Looking for a bolt action in .223 - suggestions?

Buy a cheap Weatherby Vanguard S1 or S2 on the EE, and the extra money gets spent on a decent scope and different kinds of ammunition to find what your rifle likes. I have taken over a dozen yotes with a cheap S1 Vanguard in a Houge overmold stock and decent glass. Any money left over could be put towards a E-caller to call those #####es in.

Best of luck,

5 shot group at 100 yards

My MOST accurate gun (out of over 30 different rifles) is a Vanguard S2 in .223
I can put 5 shots into .75" regularly. I have a 4-12x40 scope on it and use a bipod. I seriously cannot find any gun that shoots better. I bought it for $500
I would definately short list the S2

My choice would be the Ruger American Ranch #26965. Uses ar mags

I choose the 6965 (the same except 5 rd. rotary non-AR mag.) with 16.1" barrel makes handy and light, removable mag. with a factory picatinny rail and all for around $600.

I also chosse a Vortex scope for $700 keeping it close to your budget.

Cheers D

Sky`s the limit.

My CZ 527 is as accurate as my Browning Varmint
My Savage axis is the most accurate

Wood, Stainless, Synthetic, magazine, Blue,
Length of pull, weight...

My suggestion, Savage, Browning, CZ, Tikka, Winchester xpr, something not too heavy to being able to carry out to your spot,

yep. Savge axis is pretty good for the money. I have one in .243 win. It cloverleafs at 100. Three shots touching.

Who has it ? Looks quite interesting rifle, can shoot 5.56.

The CZ 527 is also chambered for 223/556. I have both the American and 527. The American is a fun platform to build on - upgrading factory stock, polishing bolt and action, replacing plastic parts etc., but the 527 is what comes out to the bush or range.

Take a close look at the Howa 1500 line of rifles. They are a hidden gem of the shooting and hunting worlds! The Howa is the identical barrelled action to the Weatherby Vanguard line - they are quite literally one and the same at different price-points depending on finish, etc. I have a lightweight .308 in factory FDE Cerakote as my hunting rifle and couldn't be happier with it for under $1000 CAD. The Howa 1500 is a Rem 700 killer in terms of inherent accuracy. Just saying....

Yep, CZ is another option, just proprietary mags. Are they hard to find ?

Howa looks very interesting line. Considering variety of options, who has it in Canada ?

I have had a Howa for over 12 years now. Very good gun. 1500 lightning.......Stainless with Hogue stock. 300winmag. Not the lightest gun I own, but very accurate and super smooth cycling. (As smooth as any Tikka) Ultra reliable also. It's the reason I have bought several Vanguards since. Best bang for your hunting dollar.

It'll stretch your budget to the limit, but I think the CZ 527, a true mini-Mauser, is a lot of rifle for the money. Some dislike the exposed magazine claiming it interferes with carrying the piece at the balance, but I haven't found this to be the case. The magazines are expensive, but I bought several from Western Gun Parts, so I could reload faster, and have quick access to more than one load. I purchased ghost ring and post sights from NECG. If the rifle is scoped, the rear sight must be drifted out to make room for it anyway, so a ghost ring back-up that attaches to the rear scope dovetail isn't a bad idea. I'm using Warne QD rings, and currently have a Leupold 1.75-6X mounted on the rifle. I mounted a 4-12X VX II when I first got it, but IMHO, its too big a scope for that little rifle.
