Looking for a hardshell case for my long guns (AR15, M14, shotgun, etc.), that isn't obviously a gun case. I'm thinking maybe an altered guitar case or something with eggshell foam. What do you guys use?

Be careful to avoid it being interpreted as "concealing a weapon/firearm"

be very careful if you are ever stopped and have your firearms checked by a police officer during transport. you will likely be questioned as to why you are not using a regular firearm case and answering you don't like people to know what you are carrying can be taken as "intent to conceal".

I used a regular suitcase up until I was questioned and warned, depending on the officer this could have ended very differently for myself.

"Carry concealed weapon" means on one's person, specifically. Firearms can be carried in any container you want as long as they're trigger locked in the case of a restricted firearm while being lawfully transported. Policemen/women can be full of crap, too.

I'm sure one could modify a golf bag for this purpose...

I would think that any lockable case would suffice, no? A firearm is always 'concealed' when in a case of any kind. But yeah, definitely trying to throw off anyone who would see me loading the case(s) in to the car.

sure, but even when full of crap it can cost you large amounts of money defending against those accusations. I know this first hand

a "concealed weapon" charge relies on intent being proven in a court of law. If you tell a police officer the reason you are using the case is for the explicit purpose to hide what you are transporting ("throw off") the general public you may have an issue. Not everyone views legal ownership of firearms the same way.

Oh yeah,of course, but, not in this case. I actually know a guy that puts his rifles in his golf bag. Cancer's post reminded me of that. He puts the rain cap on and leaves his guns in plain sight sitting on the cart in his man cave..

AR15 is on the OP's list so this would not be legal for transport or display unless inside a vault/gun room as stated/defined in the storage regulations under restricted firearms

Any idea where to get eggshell foam cheap? I live in a border city and have a US mailing address.

I use a Hazard 4 takedown bag for my ARs. You physically separate the gun into two parts in this bag. I also put a lock on the mag well. The molle on the sides isnt totally discrete but the firearm doesnt imprint as a firearm.

An alternate option would be bag within a bag. Prep your firearms as you normally would and then load them into a large hockey/dufflebag. Alternately I know that 511 makes two wheeled cases called the SOMS (Some of My Stuff) and the CAMS (Carry All My Stuff).

Be careful with discreet cases. I used to play airsoft and a guy that I played with was charged with carrying a concealed weapon cause he used his old guitar case to carry his airsoft gun to and from the field.

While I have never used one, lots of electric guitar cases are just simple rectangular shape hard shell cases and should work ok as a rifle case if they are thick enough to hold your rifles. The AR's and shotguns aren't very wide, but the M-14 cocking handle sticks out quite a ways and may be hard to accommodate. Lots of the soft cases don't really look much like gun cases, maybe one of those would suit your purposes? Something like this 5.11 case:

Is there a legal definition of an approved case beyond that it is not see through and it is enclosed on all 6 sides for NR, and must be lockable and not be able to be opened without the use of tools for Restricted? I didn't think so... carrying a concealed weapon charge usually refers to carrying on your person., not in a case. Many law enforcement officers don't know the first thing about gun laws. There shouldn't be an issue with a guitar case.
