I am looking for a good goose gun. I have a Rem model 870 Wingmaster 12 guage, but it only takes a 3" shell. I find I can't take those longer shots - steel just does't hit the same as lead. I am thinking of getting a 10 guage, but they are quite hard to find. Any suggestions? Are there any goose hunters out there that use a 12 guage that takes the 3.5" shell. Is there a significant difference between the 3" and 3.5" in the 12 guage?

I use 4 different shotguns and the 3.5 inch really brings down the high flyers. I shoot a SBEII in max-4 camo with the recoil absorbing comfort-tech stock for 3.5 and ithe shells are only $15.99 @ Wal-mart versus who knows how much for 10 gauge, if you can find them.

If you are looking for strictly a goose gun, shooting 3.5" shells, then I would recommend a Xtrema2 K/O. They greatly reduce felt recoil, cycle reliably in all conditions, and require very little maintenance.

Over the past two goose seasons I have used 4 different pumpguns. All worked very well except a Remington SuperMag wich jammed occasionally. After observing and participating in shooting 400 geese in those two season I believe i can form a reasonable opinion. Firstly If this is your first goose gun buy a pump this way you will be less likely to "machine gun" one shell after another when you get excited. I think that the 31/2 chamber can be helpful but only with careful patterning as all those extra pellets can either make a nice pattern or blow a resonable one. As for shells if you read the box you'll find that those cheap 14.99 boxes hold only 13/8 or even 11/4 ounces of shot wich is the same as a 3inch shell. Buy a gun with a 31/2 chamber you don't have to feed it 31/2 shells.

Actual shot payload on a 10 guage is virtually identical to a 12 guage. You'll find that a 3.5 inch shell will produce a very good pattern with steel shot (frequently better than lead 3.5's) Cost wise you'll be happier with a 12 and you'll see the same results.

I shoot 3.5" Kent #2 (sometimes BB) steel through a 870 Super Magnum. I've killed geese out to 60 yards with it. The #2's flatten geese and ducks with no problems and the 870 has taken thousands of rounds of 3.5 with no reliablility issues at all. As far as I'm concerned an 870 is the ONLY way to go.

I went with a 3.5 gun (Beretta XtremaII) so I could shoot the cheaper steel shells, with a bigger payload. Couldn't be happier with it. Super easy to maintain and very smooth shooting. With the KO recoil reduction, it makes those heavy 3.5'ers feel like regular 2-3/4 loads.

Did some goose hunting with 2 buddies this year.
1 had a Remington 1100 in 2 3/4 inch he was shooting #2 winchester drylok
1 had a Bowning BPS in 3.5 he was shooting 3.5inch federal blackcloud
I had a Mossberg 930 in 3 inch and was shooting 3inch federal blackcloud

conclusion
We all shot the same number of geese
only difference was that the guy shooting 3.5 inch had a very sore shoulder
I say try different shots before you try different guns

I bought a single shot NEF 10 gauge a couple years ago. It's great for those high flyers but you don't want to see to many coming at once. If I had done a little more homework before I bought it I might not have bothered. The recoil doesn't bother me to much but I don't use decoys I usually just sit in a ditch somewhere and hope they fly over so I'm not shooting alot. The biggest problem with the 10 gauge that I've found is ammo selection. The price isn't much different from 12 gauge but all I have been able to find is BB or BBB's in steel. I'd like to go out for turkeys if I ever get drawn but I can't find any decent ammo. I'd like to find some #4's or #2's. Steel and lead.

good luck

I've owned a few 3.5 12's then i bought a browning gold 10 guage to see what the differance is.It is night an day the problem with a 10 guage is the ammo the shell companies let the development with steel fall by the way side.Reloading companies have some great loads for tens.REcoil is less with the gold then any 12 i got,i got rid of a mp 153 i didn't like that gun at all.
Where i hunt most guys use 10's if your in a corn feild callin them in under 40 yrds you don't need a ten.We hunt bogs an sandbars out past 40 is where the 10 shines. They hold there pattern better with out buyin expensive custom chokes.I run 2 loads 1 3/4 hevi b,1.5 ounce of steel from bbb to f doin 1550.
