Hi everyone, finally decided to make a post after doing nothing but browse the site since I signed up, I've been reading various threads on the site but if anything I am just having more trouble on a decision.

I am wanting an inexpensive semi-auto .22LR, it will mostly be for plinking.

I am interested in;

Savage 64F
Mossberg 702
Remington 597

The Mossberg is particularly attractive due to it's low price, however I have yet to handle one because local stores don't seem to carry them often, if at all.

I like the Savage 64, seems well built like my Mark II BSEV. A friend of mine has a Remington 597 and I've enjoyed shooting it as well, but I've heard they can be finicky.

To anyone who owns any of these rifles, heck if anyone has a .22 not mentioned I'd love opinions. I know the 10/22 is widely considered the best .22, but for plinking cans, bottles, etc. would I REALLY be any better off using a $300 Ruger over a $150 Mossberg or a $200 Savage?

If you own any of these guns, particularly the Mossberg since I haven't heard much about them, I'd love to hear some opinions.

Thanks!

if you can wait a lil longer, the Mossberg Tactical .22 based on the Plinkster will be arriving again. was a hiccup or something with the originals. bee a wee bit more, but then you can tacticool it to your heart's content. :)

Another mossber hater. Yes it's plastic and the cost reflects it. If you want a light plastic gun, the mossbergs your gun. If you want a metal or wood, please go with the savage. Ruger is the civic of guns, if you want to replace almost everything on the gun, the ruger is the best platform.

The mossberg just feels cheap. I personally would go with a 10/22. You won't regret it.

Sorry hate to differ, but I love my mossy tactical .22. It shoots great and is accurate. Now with that being said.... I LOVE my 10/22. Mind u it's highly modified. If u just want a Plinker..... Get a Mossberg 702!!!

10/22 Carbine in its stock form is difficult to beat. The stock dimensions are very good for an adult.

Marlin 60 also has my vote.

I have a marlin 60, a couple 1022s and a cooey 64, had a savage 64, and had a few good sessions with the mossberg tactical. For the reasons you want this rifle the 1022 is IMO the best choice by far. Large reliable mags with a speed loader and unlimited potetial or use as is. For me the opposite end of the scale is the mossberg. Plastic and feels cheap. The savage 64 is a 2nd choice for this due to the mags.

Marlin 795 gets my vote. Cheap, durable, reliable, and super accurate. For the cost of a 10/22 you could get a 795, a couple extra mags, and a set of peep sights from Williams or tech sights.

Just for your knowledge Wanstalls(supporting dealer top of page) has the mossberg 702 plingsters. I have a mossberg tactical .22(702 in disguise) and it is very cheap feeling and is more or less just something I bring for buddies to play with. Yet it is quite accurate for what it is. I had a 597 vtr and it was extremely accurate out of the box and I ended uo selling it due to frequent failures. All issues that could have easily been resolved if I had more knowledge at the time(lots of reading around on those). 10/22 is my vote for your all around plinker/target shooter. So many great options tonset it up the way you want. Just be careful with the 10/22 like others have said it's a little addicting with such a strong aftermarket for them. I've easily spent double the original purchase price setting my rifles uo the way I wanted them but hey that's half the fun. Make sure to post up once you make your decision.

^x2 I bought mine for $125 all-in, brand new. Put a used $50 scope/rings on it, bought a spare mag, and have a very accurate .22lr semi for almost exactly $200.

I did own a new 10/22 for a short while. Ate everything I fed it, but accuracy (some of us around here think that's more important than high-capacity mags :) ) wasn't great..to say the least. The 10/22 has the slight advantage of having more adult-like dimensions, more heft, decent wood stock, etc. but the 795 gets it done for me. WAY more accurate rifle for 1/2 the price of the 10/22..and I love how light it is for long hikes in the bush.

I like the last shot hold open feature of my Marlin 60, but the 10/22 is "the" .22LR.

10/22 not accurate enough? There are endless parts available, so much so that you can build the entire gun piece-by-piece from scratch if so inclined. The 10/22 may not make 1/4" groups on paper in stock form, but IMO it's plenty accurate for the real world.

Totally agree, if you want a complete package and not mod it, the mossberg is the cheap way to go ( hey it's cheap). If you want to sink in $400-$600 bucks on a tin can blaster the 10/22 is the best bet.
However at that price you could get a very accurate savage.

You mention the 64F, 702 and 597 and people choose the 795, Model 60, and 10/22.
I'd think about that for a moment. I suspect most here formed their opinion not by flipping a coin.

My vote is for 795 or marlin 60. Cheap, reliable and accurate.
The savage 64 is a decent gun but it has no last shot hold open and the mags are hit or miss.... and you are limited to 10 rounds. The brand new one I had was junk so I had to buy another which worked flawlessly. Lots of people have issues with their mags.
Marlin 60 has 14 round tube fed....795 has 10 round mags and you can get 25 round shooters choice, though the jury is still out whether they are any good or not.

I'd just like to thank everyone again for the responses. I hadn't considered a Marlin so I never really looked into them, however the Model 60SN has really sparked my interest after a little research, and it's well within the price range I had hoped for. The Fiberforce aftermarket stock looks pretty sweet for it as well!

So, thanks for the recommendations! I'll be sure to let everyone know and post up some pics once I do make the final decision but I'm pretty sure that I'll be getting the Marlin 60. :D
