Looking for a semi-auto--Benelli M4 or Beretta 1301 Tactical?

I want to hear everyone's opinions regarding both shotguns to help shape my decision when I finally get around to buying a semi-auto (can't have both--not enough space for another gun cabinet LOL)

The initial one I was going to buy is the Benelli M4 mainly because it's been proven and dependable--though yes expensive. But then I read about the Beretta 1301--considerably less impact on the wallet and performs just as well

Whichever one I'll buy I'm going to be getting aftermarket stuff to slap on it (or just straight up take it to TACORD) so I want to hear what you guys have to say.

What do you all recommend and why? Can you share any firsthand experience with either shotguns?

Thanks!

The M4 is a tank and feels super slick in the hands. Very smooth shooter.

But the 1301 might be better value for the money in my opinion. Lighter than an M4 but super reliable as well, easier to carry around.

They are both amazing shotguns, at this point and with the political climate, I'd grab 1 of each!
Both would be nice--maybe one first then the other later down the line LOL

Looks like the general impression is "Beretta yes. But Benelli, hell yes" so I'll see where budget and availability is by the time I get to buy another fun toy haha

TACORD upgrade for both too I guess

I have the 1301 comp with 21” barrel. Hate ghost rings so went with that. Functions flawlessly. Love it. Difference in price translates to a lot of ammo, and it’s very light and Tacord works on the 1301’s and has the aftermarket stuff usually in stock

The M4 is on the ban list!

If bill C21 is voted into law .... then you will not be able to do much with an M4 ... except maybe to admire it. And who knows, you might not even be able to keep it ...

Does anybody know if the 1301 is on the list?

All the more reason to buy one

OP, why do you need a semi auto shotgun?

For run-and-gun disciplines (since you mentioned TacOrd), Benelli M2 will be a better choice than M4: lighter, faster, cheaper, mods are well developed. M1 Anniversary Edition is basically M2 metal in a no-frills plastic stock, a good candidate for tuning. Quad loads work even out of the box, albeit not ideally.
Rem VersaMax is an option too: it is designed for 3.5” shells, an extended mag holding 5.9 3.5” shells will accommodate 7 regular shells.

That is a very good point. More money saved on a good gun translates to more I can spend on food for it haha

Pretty much this exactly--if it's gonna get banned, I have one. It's a lot easier to stop procurement(lol) than it is to confiscate what's already out there. If it's on the list and the ban goes through, sure I'm not going to take it out and shoot...If they knock on my door to grab it, sure take em. But I'm not going to go to my nearest police officer to hand it to them the moment it gets banned

This is also a good point. I've never considered the M2--something to look into!
In terms of "needs", my father passed on his Mossberg pump shotgun to me so I'm just in the market for a semi-auto to add to my collection. I'm not training for any kind of run-and-gun disciplines at the moment but I do want to get something that will be suited for those needs once the time comes for me to get into it (vs buying any cheap ol' semi-auto like an M4 clone and then buying a more robust one later down the one when I may or may not be able to get one anymore)

I did not see the M4 on the list. Yet anyway....

I have a 1301 comp with 21" barrel. It is very soft shooting with the heavy loads I put thru it. After 80 rounds of 1.5oz loads it was cycling 3/4oz reloads that weren't strong enough to reset a browning trigger
Very light fast gun. The oversized controls and ports make it great for a waterfowl gun

The M4 is softer shooting than the M2, but both are excellent. Only 'complaint' is I wish you could get a vent rib barrel for the M4, a first world problem.

Haha, those are all I hear the most about so they are the first ones that come into mind when I think "semi-auto boomstick" LOL
