Looking for advice on an entry level multi-purpose shotgun for 3 gun match and trap shooting. I have my eyes on the Mossberg 930 but would like to see other recommendations.

Benelli M2 gets you the Benelli performance but not quite so pricey as an M4.

For some reason, I prefer the traditional rifle style stock over a pistol grip on my shotguns.

Does it have to be a semi?
In Canada, pump is a better choice due to the fact that you do not have a limited capacity.

I would go with a Benelli nova/supernova.
It is chambered for 3.5" shells, which means the loading and ejection ports are huge.
Very easy to load on the clock.

If Remington is your thing, I would get an older wingmaster.
Quality of recent remington pumps is questionable.

Go to a match or two and see what everyone is using.
Ask questions and see if you can fire a few shots, and decide what you like the best.

If its a semi you are after, take a look at the Remington Versamax.
Seems to be getting popular with the 3gun crowd in the US.
Compare it to the 930 and go from there.
I would go with a Benelli M2 if that's in your budget.
I've also heard that the Winchester SX3 is a decent gun.

Ultimately, go handle and fire as many as you can and buy what you like, and can shoot well.
Its hard to suggest one gun that performs well for multiple disciplines.
Might be good at them all, but may not be great at any of them.

Or you could just get a maverick combo with a 18.5 half inch barrel and a 28" field barrel for like $240 at wholesale sports, and get two birds stoned

Yes semi is preferable, I will do some research on the Remington Versamax and 1100 series. The Benelli is out of my budget right now but will definitely consider it later if I am more serious about the sport. Also don't want to be in the bad books with the misses :)

I'd say no to 1100 series.
Way different than a versamax and have undesirable features for 3 gun.
Rubber o-ring in the gas system is a weak point, and there's a button on the lifter than needs to be pressed to get shells into the mag tube.
Minor things, but if you are serious about getting into competitive shooting with this gun, you should try to avoid features that might slow you down when on the clock.

Just my $.02

Nearly every gas semi uses an O-ring of some kind, granted the 1100's seems to be a particular weak point.

Many don't have rubber o-rings.
Gas pistons don't get chewed up as easily as an o-ring.
The versamax for example, uses a gas system somewhat similar to the benelli M4.

Not saying the 1100/1187 aren't good guns, but there are others better suited to the what the OP is looking for.

930 does not have a rubber gas ring. It's aluminum or steel but must be taken apart and cleaned every 500-1000 otherwise gunk will build up under the ring and make it swell which will eventually cause the piston to jam inside the gas cylinder.
It's a 3 minute job, but it must be done nonetheless.

Just thought I'd throw that out there for what it's worth.

If you can afford the an 1100 or a Versa-max you have the means to buy the better and faster Browning Silver/Winchester SX3 shotguns. The 3 1/2 inch versions and an aftermarket extension, blocked to 5.9 of the 12 gauge cigars, will give you an 8+1 capacity with 2 3/4 rounds.

get a used 870 wingmaster or express off the EE and shoot that for 6 months. learn what you like in a shotgun from that and fellow shooters at the range and in competition, then resell it for what you paid and get what you want (or keep it for back up).
