Looking for an AK-47

If you want an AK so much, why not go teach English overseas for a few years? Many countries will allow you to own a gun if you have a valid residence permit and a "Canadian gun licence" (your PAL). In Poland, Czech Rep, Romania or other E.Euro countries you can buy semi-auto AKs as a civilian. And if you are brave enough to work somewhere like Pakistan or Central Asia, or Africa all you would need is the money to buy one.

The WRONG WAY and MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!!

M16 = Militarized AR15

I wasn't speaking historically.

I was contrasting how we're closer to owning an m16 in it's semi auto only version than were are to acquiring an ak in any configuration (without grandfathering).

Either way it's no more than common knowledge. :)

In Poland firearms laws are very strict, the only way you can own a gun is if you belong to a hunting club and the only time you can fire it is when the club designates a time and place to go hunting and you go hunting with it..... Therefore, it would be pretty much useless, as there would be many more suitable calibers and more accurate rifles for hunting.

Thanks for stepping in on this one boss, ya beat me to it.

I've personally handled live, Full Auto AR-15's.

They do exist, in fact, they existed for a number of years before the US Military type classified the rifle as the M-16 and had it so stamped.

Probably looking for his Armalite patent .......

Being a border Yank, I definitly remember passing through the border in Detroit to Windsor, Ontario and driving by a sporting store that displayed several AK variants in their window. This was about 20 yrs ago and was after Bush one signed an executive order banning foreign made "assault rifles" including the AK-47 . People pointed out that you couldn't buy one here but could in Canada. So what happened to the AK's I saw for sale in Canada? In the US, all AK s here were grandfathered in and later people found a way around the rule by "Americanizing " them ---------by putting enough USA made parts in them so they were considered Domestically made which were still legal to sell.

So again, what happened to those Ak's I saw in the window in Windsor all those years ago?

Same like yours, grandfathered to owners who had them, or others in it's 'class', at the time.

But if you don't have that class on your license, you won't... until the laws change.

In a nutshell, a previous Conservative government created laws that made them illegal.

Under the Progressive Conservative government of Justice Minister Kim Campbell, AK variants were declared "Restricted" under Bill C-17 (1992) which required them and a number of other military type semi auto's to be registered. Like handguns.

The idea was to "weed out the Rambos". The PC's honestly didn't think the move would cost them any capital with the firearms community, but it did, firearms owners moved to the Reform Party, the PC's suffered the worst election defeat in Canadian history in 1993.

When the Liberals came to power, they introduced Bill C68 (1995). The majority of Military semi auto's on the Restricted list were converted to prohibited. The idea here was ALL guns were bad and needed to be registered, but some were badder than others and needed to be "banned".

Grandfathering provisions of Canadian firearms laws are supposed allay fears of gun confiscation, but it's a lie. Slow and inevitable confiscation is confiscation nonetheless, firearms owners know it, and the politicians and gun control bureaucrats are fooling nobody.

Registration equals confiscation, and certainly leads to harrassing regulations like the 12(X) SAP situations we have now.

The biggest joke is only about a third of the firearms requiring registration under Bill C-17 in 1992 ever got registered.

The rest are still out there. Unregistered. Often in the possession of people who were either ignorant of the laws that were introduced in a haphazard and slapdash way, or who refused to register for fear of prohibition and were proved right.

Theses firearms are completely beyond the control of law enforcement and the firearms bureaucracy.

Our only hope is organizations like NFA and CSSA with gun owners like us placing pressure on everyone to try to protect what rights we have left.

AK King: I would recommend a SKS D and add a few parts to make it look AKish or a VZ 58. Personally I wouldn't bother to buy an AK if I could since I can do the same thing with my SKS D. Still I would love to have a 30 round clip again. Those days were fun.
