Looking for best pump-shotgun for $400

Let's agree on this issue: Both 870 Express and Mossberg 500 seem to be good guns for the price. Owners of both seem to be happy with them. That's more than enough for someone who is looking into buying one of the two. Pick the one that is more pleasing to the eye and fits you better.

The Mossberg 500 combo (28" and 18.5") for $320.

I am just wondering if I could get your help for a friend..He has expressed interest in buying a shotgun...he would like to go with us when we go shoot skeets next week with a bunch of friends. He wants his own shotgun for this...he has a $400 limit, and he is a fan of the pump-action...I was wondering what would be the best shotgun out there for this price range. Lets say $400 before taxes, so it could be $399+tax. By best I mean: reliability, recoil reduction, functionality, those sort of things. Is an 870 a tried and true shotgun to purchase or is there something else worth looking at?

I like the 870 Wingmaster and the 870 Police (and the HP9-1) but not the 870 Express. The Express is another thing altogether.

For $400., I'd take the Mossberg 500.

I bought a brand new 870 Express Super Magnum 8 years ago and have never looked back. It's killed ducks, geese, grouse, deer and turkeys and fired tens of thousands of rounds and never repeat NEVER jammed or failed in any way. It is the most reliable firearm I have ever owned bar none. I will agree it's not as smooth as my wingmasters but it has proven itself beyond reliable.

I have not had much first hand experience with newer mossbergs but a friend has grown to hate his. We sank a duck boat 2 years ago and all I could think as it disappeared out of sight was thank god it's finally gone. Unfortunatly he grabbed it before it sank out of reach LOL. Safe to say I'm not a mossberg fan.

Mossberg 535
I will recommend this shotgun to anyone that wants a less expensive pump. I have had mine for a few years and it was my first gun. I have done everything with it, shooting clays, hunting deer, turkey and it has never ever failed me. I got the riffled barrel and 28" vent ribbed with mine for $329 a couple years ago.

I looked into the weatherby also, but there just isnt any solid feedback on them yet,I know gobles in tillsonburg/london has them on for 335,but if anyone shoots one id love to hear a review

:D
That Dominion Arms Grizzly of mine shoots slugs & 000 buck pretty good (I must have lucked out & got a good one) & the Chinese copied the Remington 870 exactly so the design is good too.

The sighting system & short barrel make it a fantastically fast swinging brush gun for ruffed grouse & deer.

I don't hunt ducks so the Grizzly is the only pump action scattergun I need.

You know it's a real shame that a reasonably low cost shot-gun can't be purchased at a reasonable cost anymore. You would be better off buying a good used Win Mod 12,Wingmaster,ithica,or even mossy!

Bob:)

I just ordered a mossberg 500 28" VR & 24" Fully rifled deer barrel with sights for $379.95, I went in to get an 870 express in left hand, but it just didn't fit right, the 500 shouldered very well and just felt better. My neighbor has had his 500 for years and years and never had an issue of any kind. I'll let you know once it arrives and I get 100 or so down the tube. (2-3 weeks)

Yah, but there's nuthin as cool as being pulled to the side on a hunting spot check while the stern faced & intense looking COs/cops check out the legality of that short barreled shottie.

Almost as much fun as being invited for a live guest appearance in the "Cops" TV show.

"Bad boy, bad boy whaddya gonna do when they come for yew"

"All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law"

Sarcasm aside........I'm probably more conservative than most when it comes to firearms etiquette but I can't help it if most cops aren't abreast of the law & have to patch into the CFO at the first sight of a unorthodox looking but quite legal "black" gun and I'm certainly not going to refrain from using a 100% legal gun because it might cause some minor controversy......their lack of knowledge is THEIR problem not mine.

870 all the way. Express is the synthetic version, so it's lighter/more felt recoil, but almost impossible to beat in quality/reliability for that price point. Go 870 and dont look back.

870 Express is the laminated version, 870 Express Synthetic is the one you are referring to.

I like my Mossberg 500. I have put at least 500 shells through it with no problems at all. That being said, the Remington 870 is also a valid choice for an inexpensive shotgun.

I get a kick out of those people that believe the brand that they didn't choose is junk. I believe that kind of loyalty makes one look like an ass every time. Both the Remington, and Mossberg are good solid reliable guns. I chose the Mossberg because the controls fit me better.
Incidentally; when the U.S. military chose the Mossberg, the Remington was being looked at just as carefully, and at that time the Mossberg won out for reliability; plain and simple. That's why Remington came out with the anti-jam modification. To think that a relatively small company like Mossberg out-bribed a large company like Remington is a little silly. And Reminton would not bend over and just allow another company to have a huge military comtract; their stock holders would hang them.
