Looking for ideas for a used big bore hunting rifle (by big I mean larger than a .308) for a man on a budget - I'd prefer not in a calibre that is handload only.

any ideas (calibre and make)?

many thanks

Budget. Savage in a 300 WM or 7mm Rem Mag. Good rifle with price to match.Factory ammo everywhere.
You could get the 300 WM or 7mm Rem Mag in a Stevens (savage) for around $400.

35 Whelen is a good choice for a medium bore as you can load it down with 200gr bullets and have fun with it or max it out w/250s. Easy to shoot either way and lots of power for NA. :D

I was going to say 35 Whelen but have to think bigger, 338 win mag just what John said, will do any thing we have here.
Gord.

Well, .35 is bigger than .33 :p . Another vote for the .35 Whelen.

Have you ever shot a .45-70? One shot at 330 paces= nice buck. The .45-70 was a long range buffalo gun in competent hands.
Yeah, and on another continent 100 years ago the 9.3x62 was droppin Elephant.
