So what's the general preference for revolvers around here? Should I also be looking at the ruger GP100?

Can't beat the 686 in either 4.2 or 6 inch flavour - given my proximity to a good revolver smith I'd get the trigger cleaned up and be set for life.

Thanks Enefgee. So basically a smith and wesson L frame then. The one I'm looking at is the 386 Hunter. From what I can see the only diff between it and a 686 is the front sight and it is Mat black.

Not the only differences. The 386's frame is made of scandium alloy so the whole gun only weighs 30 oz. Alloy framed guns are meant to be carried much but shot little. And the overall lightness will result in a much sharper recoil over a heavier gun. That'll get old really quick. I'd go with the all stainless steel 686.

Do they make blued 686's ? And I'm assuming you can change the sight on these?

If you like the Blued look over the stainless then the gun you want is a S&W model 586. Roger at shooters choice alberta has the exact gun you are looking for. You will not find a better price or a better fellow to deal with either. The front sight can be changed very easly as well if you want to put a fiber optic on it.

As stated above the recoil on the 386 is a whole more then on the 686 or 586. My buddy had a 386 and I got to use it whenever he took it to the range. With 38's it was fine but with 357 rounds it was not very much fun to shoot. He did not keep it very long.

Thanks graydog. My search narrows. I think I'd still like to find a Plus model with 7 shots. I HATE THESE DECISIONS!!! Now I almost like the stainless better, lol. Thanks for pointing me to shooters choice. Within driving distance and his prices do seem pretty good.

Blued 686 is called a 586, I think.

You might want to et us know what you intend to do with the revolver. Compete? Plink? If yuo intend to compete check out the rules of the sport you want to shoot. No sense buying a gun that doesn't meet the sports rules. If to plink, a .22 will do that and shooting will be a lot less expensive.
