Looking for new IPSC Standard Div Pistol

I have been thinking of a glock 35 with upgrades to try out standard division without investing a ton of money.
I did that. After upgrades I spent almost as much as the cost of a Tanfoglio Limited Custom. I ran it for two years with almost no issues. Once I switched I I never looked back. I shot one in a match recently and found it much harder to shoot than my STI.

Did the same with a G34, shot it for many years and got very good with it.
After this Limited Custom I can honestly say I would be at a disadvantage, even with a slicked up Zev trigger, mag well and barrel.
The weight, the trigger, the accuracy, it's in a different galaxy.

Consider myself a very good shooter, but there is no way I could keep up to this thing in my prime with the G34, even if it was scored Major.
My 2cents for what it's worth.

Just picked up a used Tanfoglio Limited Custom, and have been very impressed so far.

Switching from Revo to Standard and wanted to dip my toes in at the 1400 range with mags.

I'm just a pokey old guy that loves guns and will always have IPSC as his first love. I shoot a Tanfoglio Limited Custom Xtreme now and it's the best gun I've ever used in any sort of competition. Magazines are somewhat less expensive in the quantities needed for the games and the support out of Freedom Ventures is very good. I haven't touched my .40 LC at all as I can't think of a way to improve it. However, I did buy it's much cheaper brother the Limited Pro and had a great time upgrading that with Xtreme parts. I use that mostly in the US for three gun using full capacity magazines. Neither gun has ever even hiccoughed on me and they fit my hand better than the STI's do. To me they are worth a look particularly if you have smaller hands and like the CZ design. There are a lot of similarities between the Tanfos and the CZ pistols.

Every now and then I read a post that makes me go whhaattt? Could you please elaborate on how "no safety" makes a glock shoot faster than any gun out there ?

Any gun with a safety is off long before you crack the first shot. Glock triggers are terrible too.

If you want to buy a gun specifically made for IPSC Standard division, then $2000 is the minimum you would pay.
Three choices for you:
1. STI - U.S. made 1911 (2011 if double stack). Slide is smooth as butter and trigger is the best I've seen on the market. Where to buy? Freedom Ventures
2. Tanfoglio - Italian made improvement on a CZ. They have a Standard model called "Limited" with ported slide, etc. Trigger is around 2 lb but awfully long compared to 1911/2011 guns. Ported slide rides inside the rails, not outside, which contributes to accuracy and you can ride your thumbs high and close to the frame without fear of slowing down the slide. Barrel goes thick and heavy towards the muzzle end of the barrel, the added weight contributes to less muzzle jump. Where to buy? Freedom Ventures.
3. BUL M-5 IPSC - Israeli made 2011, a pleasure to run for a fraction of the cost of an STI. Where to buy? Marstar.

But if you don't want to break a bank, then you can always buy an old Para and upgrade it to your liking, if you're handy. But the end bill might still be close to $2000 + your time that you can't take back.

With the risk of this exploding into a Standard vs. Production "class warfare" discussion, I thought I'd toss this up there for suggestions/comments.

I've been shooting IPSC for 15 years using a Para-Ord P16-40 Limited. In its day (before their QC and the physical factory went south), it was a great starter Standard pistol. I've modified it over the years and I've shot it a lot. It still functions well although it is showing its age and I have plenty of reloading components so I'm plenty happy with .40 S&W. I really don't have any great interest or desire to move to Production division.

So, what are my current options for a double stack .40 S&W ready Standard division pistol? I could pick up a used Para I guess. I'm not familiar enough with the current offerings from STI to pick one. To tell the truth I'm not keen on dropping $2000 or $2500 or more for a new pistol, mags, pouches, etc. but I recognize that the bill might run that high. $3000 would be an absolute top end and I'd have to be really convinced to even come close to that number. I just don't shoot nearly often enough to justify that kind of cash outlay, at least not yet.

I am extremely happy with the 1911 form and function as I've been shooting one for years. Don't even suggest a Glock as the grip angle just doesn't do it for me.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

an easy answer - just go to your local IPSC match and take a look at top 5 shooters :) what would you see? - let us know....

for Alberta - they are all 2011 guns (with one exeption for a deeply modified Glock).....if you want to be competetive, get the same ride ;)

In Ontario, Standard division is plagues by 1911, 2011 (you don't have to go double stack to get 10 rounds :)), then Tanfoglio, and custom mambo-jumbo of home gunsmithing.

Easy -- one less action to take care of.

I accept that the Tanfoglio trigger is "longer" but the takeup can be minimized. However I find it hard to buy that sweeping the safety on a 1911 or my SA Tanfo actually consumes time. Given that it's a first shot only thing, even if it did actually take time, the minimal travel of a 1911 or even the Tanfo trigger on subsequent shots surely wipes the floor over the Glock or similar. I maintain that since the safety is the one and only place from my strong thumb, taking care of the safety as part of getting the sight picture is NADA.

Huh? Who's winning Standard in Ontario at large matches with a single stack 1911?

2011 (you don't have to go double stack to get 10 rounds :))
But you do to get a massive mag well opening combined with a very tapered magazine design that allows more than a 45 degree screw-up on insertion of the magazine to still result in a decent magazine change.

as some one who went from para to 2011 ive gotta jump on the pile.

para is a great gun. the 2011 is excellent. the extra weight up front makes it a very nice blaster. the ability to modify your plastic grip is a nice bonus.

you should be able to find one second hand for 1500-2000. might need a trigger, might not.

I would say the STI would last the longest and I think have a lifetime warranty. I have seen the major caliber Tanfoglios crack on the left side rear safety and they only have a 2 or 3 year warranty.
