Looking for new rifle caliber suggestions

I currently have a 223, 22-250 and a 300 ultra mag. I am looking for a caliber in the middle of the varmint cartridges and the ultra mag. I was thinking maybe 270 win or 308 win. What would you pick keeping in mind the calibers I currently own?

You've answered your own question;).

Pick the rifle you like that matches your needs and taste in either of these, and your are good to go.

P.S., I like short action(.308) in lever and semi carbines, the .270 in anything else, especially lightweight bolt guns with 22" barrels. Your choice though. And don't forget the .30-06, the pappy!!

You need to tell us what and where you plan on hunting with this rifle.

It is going to be more for shooting paper than hunting. However I want a rifle that would be good for white tails, with a flat trajectory and capable of about 400-500 yards shots(for shooting paper, not animals at that distance).

Also this will not be a be all end all middle weight gun, when money allows i will acquire more calibers 243, 25-06,7mm magnum, 270, 308 and 30-06 are all on the list.

I am just looking for the "best" calibre for me to split the difference currently.

I'll also vote for the 6.5 swede. I love mine and it has been my "in between" rifle for a very long time. I must say however that I'm growing very fond of my 7 mm 08' as well. Either would be a great choice but there are plenty others out there to fill the void.

If its for paper punching .308 WIN wins hands down due to large availability of surplus 7.62x51 and commercial FMJ. it will be cheaper then any other cartridge in that category (excluding 7.62x39).

Yet another vote for .308 Win.

.270 for the win. (geddit? :)

actually 308 for the win! lol
i would get a 308 win though, great caliber.

Yes .308 WIN for the real win! :D

Just what I was going to say! I will add .308 Win has more expensive factory ammo than 7.62x39, but it has better factory hunting ammo selection. And it has better barrel life expectancy than 243 Win, 25-06, 6.5x55, 257 Weatherby, 270 Win, 7mm Mag, and the 30-06.

Since you already are leaning toward the .270 Win and the .308 Win., I could only suggest that, as a crossover caliber, (i.e. varmint and deer size game) I would further refine your choices to become the .270 WSM (a .270 with more velocity hence better ballistics) and the 7-08 Rem (a great substitute for the .308 offering better ballistics and less recoil). Just MHO.

the halfway point between .308 and .224 is .266............you need a 6.5 of some sort or a .257 maybe.

A 260 Rem, 6.5 x 55 or a 257 Rob, or a 25-06 would work...or, you could make it simple and just get a 243...
