Looking for non-restricted semi-auto center fire rifle suitable for deer hunting

for deer you can use a Mini-14 also. I know some will say 223 for dear?! I have a Mate who used 223 extensivly for dear.....He initially didn't think it would be good enough, but after a few hunts, he was very happy with his decision.

Boltgun

I am a proponent of bigger is better. Nothing puts a deer down like a 12 guage slug!

I like my .270 for high power deer but a 7.62X39 would probably make a good bush gun. The last 2 years I have been tempted to throw my CZ858 in the truck to use just for pushing bush. Not much different than a 30-30 as has been said.

I would not use a .223 for deer although it might be legal in Manitoba - manitoba says no 22 cal...is .223 considered bigger than .22? In any case... nail some steel plates at 200 yards with a .223 and a 7.62X39. Just the sound will tell you that there is a heck of of a lot more punch in the 7.62X39.

Keep an eye on the EE...they will be turning up for a while I think.

Also head on over to the battle rifles section, guys there usually know what stores have them in stock. You can often find them a couple of months after marstar sells out, for only about a $25-50 premium.

Also call marstar, they sometimes have cancellations and a surprise spare or two turns up.

I have a few of these rifles, they are unbeatable for the money!

I'm waiting for a cancellation with Marstar but if they don't get on that in the next couple days I found 2 places in Quebec that still have them :( I wish my wife would let me get more than one :p

Buy several, configure them identically, and tell her you bought a Springfield. As long as she never sees more than one at a time....

Frontier is still showing M-14's for $469. Fabsports has the GI stocks. If you're hunting in the bush (close range and heavy cover) 7.62x39 will work fine for deer and Black bear. In the open, or in Grizzly Country go bigger.

Is Russian Izhmash Tiger restricted or prohibited?

It's a civilian version of Dragunov (SVD). Dragunov is listed as prohibited (considered as a variation of AK-47). But the Russian SVD has different action design. Only the clones are AK-47 based. Tiger is a modification of original Russian SVD. Also comes in .308Win (7.62x51), optional original SVD 620mm barrel and various stocks. Should be good for hunting. I also saw a video which demonstrated sub-MOA precision with hunting ammo.

I don't know if it's been specifically ruled on, but I'd bet money it's considered the same as the SVD.

Damn it. You are right. It's unfair. I think they just preserving North American market from competition. I do not see any big tactical advantages of SVD over M14.

9mm-Suppository, in your EE post for the M-14S, I'd expand what Hungry did for it. Regardless, with the scope mount, the stock and the flash hider and wrench thrown in, the work Hungry did is practically free. Not a bad deal at all, I'd certainly rather have that than an M1A :p You might want to consider listing what each of those accessories would be worth new.

USSR2K, it's because it's too much like an AK-47 and the AK-47 is prohibited because only bad guys use it in movies. They were going to prohibit the AR-15 too however it was used in competitive shooting and thus was allowed to be "restricted". Basically they went through a Firearms Digest and simply banned all the "scary" looking rifles. The M14/M1A were not in there and thus didn't get banned, or perhaps it's because if they were, they looked so normal without a pistol grip and the nice wood stock. The FN FAL is pretty much in the same class as the M14 and it got prohibited.

I'm not sure most people want to haul around an M-14 in the bush though, it's not a light weight gun.
