Hey all,
I'm just looking for your feedback or opinion on this. I'm thinking about buying a new lever action (because they're awesome and just so damn fun to shoot but i'm looking at the Marlin 1895SBL 45-70 gov't.
I've read that they kick hard but that's no big deal, apparently they're mainly best used for close range in brush within 100 yards and that's fine for me and that they will drop pretty much anything on the planet that breathes oxygen. ..exactly what i'm looking for, so is there really a down side to this gun?
Any thoughts?

I have that exact rifle and love it to death. well worth the money plus theyve come down in price since i bought mine (1k at the time ). I shoot mostly cast 405 grain bullet s outta mine but it shoots everything well . stop asking go get it and shoot the heck outta it you wont look back.

A guy let me shoot his 45-70 H&R single at the range one day... And now that it all I think about!! Let me know how it goes I'm eying one of those Marlins as well...

I have one built out of an enfield no 5.

It's fun, the rifle isn't a light weight gun and has a good recoil pad so the recoil is quite manageable. They are a bit pricey to shoot but I'm saving my brass to do some reloading when i have time.

If you think they are adequate for shooting all big game on the planet, apparently they are! I highly suggest reading the review section for garret cartridges if your longing for a 45-70, lot's of good reviews, albeit an expensive box of ammo : http://www.garrettcartridges.com/4570reviews.html

Have the marlin 45/70 cowboy with the octagon barrel and love it. Real tame shooter with the long barrel, and good for longer shots too. Didn't hesitate to squeeze a round off at a big bear (318 on the hook) at 250 yards. One shot was all I needed.

There are faster, bigger and hotter calibers out there, but 45/70 is a goodie I my opinion. I also considered the 450 marlin, but happy with my decision

I had a strange infatuation with a stainless Marlin 45/70 at my local gun store. I had no logical reason for wanting it - I don't spend much time in the bush, there are no big nasty furies here, at least none that an -06 or 308 wouldn't handle. I'm not even a fan of lever guns, but there it was, shiny stainless and gorgeous wood, slim petite and capable of dealing with anything. Thank god someone else was stricken worse than me.

I have a Pedersolli Remington Rolling block with octo bbl on it....well i sort of have it....my father borrowed it years ago and tells me he loves it.

I have 6 different .45-70's at the moment, and have owned many more at various times. It's one of those chamberings that is so much fun to shoot that it's easy to justify another one. Expensive? Yeah, but what centerfire cartridge isn't?...that's why you handload.

Best of all...a 1-inch .45-70 group is WAY more impressive-looking than a 1-inch .22-cal group. :)

As far as recoil goes, my 1895GBL is more pleasant to shoot than my 1894 in .44Mag. Both with factory loadings. Mind you, the GBL comes with a Decelerator pad on it. But the point still stands.
