Looking into an optic mount for CSA Vz

Is it just me, or should someone make a rear cover heavy enough that a rail could be mounted on top that wouldn't need to be re-zeroed after every shot? If that rear cover was made beefier, with a nice rail integrated on top, that would be a solution to the side mount retro (?). I'm not a fan of those side mounts. The optic needs to be closer to the shooter's eye to the rear of the receiver. A heavier rear cover, and I mean really heavier, would solve the problem of getting the optic closer to the shooter's eye. That "tin" factory cover clearly isn't going to cut it. And I have yet to see someone come up with a really stoutly built rear cover. (Yes, even the Zahal cover.)

.....?

Every dustcover rail i have never needed to be zeroed after every shot or when disassembled and reassembled.
Have you even ever used one?

I did a review write up on them over 2-3 years ago.

We actually just did a 3 part break down on Vz58 optics mounts. Did weight, pic-length and height over bore comparisons between dust covers, POSP style mounts, and handguard/red-dot mounts. Should be live this week!

Yes, I have tried the Zahal mount. It doesn't hold zero after disassembly and re-mount. So, I think I'm going to try the expensive one from GunExpert.

I guess you got shafted on that one cuz I have several of them with out any issues that I have been using for years now and am still using them.
I also had the sa58 QD one and if you plan on putting it on a CSA rifle. Look else where cuz it won't fit ;-)

I have the Zahal one and it does hold zero after re-assembly. Just have to make sure the side screws are tight. Then again, not really sure how you'd tell with a CZ/VZ - damn thing is minute of barn door at best... ;)

minute of barn door....hilarious!

But seriously, I want a little help for my 51 year old eyes. Especially when shooting beyond 200m and when the lighting is poor. So...a scope is what I chose.

The one thing you have to consider with almost any mount is where is the brass goong. Admittedly with the zahal dust cover you can't use a very long scope woth out a brass deflector.

^^^drooling over those, my wife told me to pick out a firearm for my birthday coming up. I can't decide between a vz58, vz61 or maybe a cz85 combat...

Definitely something Czech is what I want, man those vz58's in full wood trim look great.

Yes there is a higher side mount but then you should consider a chin weld over a cheek weld shooting style

Dustcover rail has a groove cut straight down the middle of it for use of iron sights still.

I like the Magwedge rails but I just don't know if my gun will. My sks didn't at least when combined with my shooting style which means high round counts and rapid fire. More of a closer to medium range battle practice kind of style. He said 100 rounds without malfunction is a good enough field test, maybe for some. I want to know if it will function flawlessly under extreme shooting conditions. The the direction of ejection and the gun heating up and the chamber getting sticky are huge factors. My sks throws a lot of the casings straight up and some even go off to the left instead of the right. I need something that can hold up to that because one malfunction isn't acceptable for me. The ejection port is designed to be completely open overhead so something like a Kwik rail needs an extreme field test and the specs to be dialed right in to accommodate it. I believe that can be done. I replaced my sks rail with a modern iron sight leaf. I do plan to use the rail on another sks with magnification though. In my experience the rail is better suited for people who shoot with magnification. The Kwik rail is a great product but you are taking a bit of a gamble when it comes to your particular gun and/or your shooting habits. Not trying to bash it at all, it's a genius idea and it is a great buy. Just intended as constructive criticism.

I haven't finished getting to know just how my Vz58 ejects but the manual does say that the ejected casings should be directed up and to the right. So maybe a Kwik rail for a Vz58 will work better for me than the one for the sks.
