I'm thinking about refurb'ing my dad's old Ithaca 37 for a steel shot duck gun. Maximum number 2's is fine with me. Here is what I have in mind:

1) Cut the 30" full choke barrel down to 26"
2) Have screw in choke installed (this is the part I am most concerned about - is there enough meat to do this?)
3) Have forcing cones lengthened to soften the squeeze
4) Refinish metal work to a flat finish
5) Install a Choate stock and fore arm

Question is - can I do this with a model 37 and expect it to be okay with steel? As mentioned, most concerned about the screw in work.

Finally - does anyone know of a good gunsmith in the Winnipeg area that can do the metal work?

I've already got modern steel capable shotguns. This one was my father's and we used to duck hunt together. It isn't much use for that in its present configuration, so I thought I would update it so it could have a new lease on life. You are right, I'll likely spend more than an 870 Express and certainly more than the gun is worth, at least in terms of dollars.

Send me the barrel, I can open the choke up for steel shot and alter the forcing cone and it will work just fine. Choke tubes in those skinny barrels are not possible usually. Email me if you are interested.

Contact Sharpes Guns in Dunnville Ontario. The owner now owns all of Ithaca Canada's stock He will pay a very good price for your original Ithaca fixed choke barrel and discount a NEW Ithaca steel shot barrel with choke tubes accordingly. If I remember your barrel is mint so it would be worth around 150.00 to 200.00 brand new steel shot barrels are around 375.00 This would put your cost way under the cost of any Remington or Browning replacement barrels. I think the owner is Ron Sharp. Used to have his number but don't anymore. Make a post in the shotgun section someone will have his number.
cheers Darryl

Let me know if you want an Ithaca barrel. Vented rib and 3 choke tubes.

The only thing you would have to do is move the lug for the shorter mag tube, and remove the paint, or leave it. It's a wanna be wetlands pattern :D

You can cut the barrel and have an external adjustable choke installed (polychoke), they are rated for steel shot. This installation usually results in a lowering of the value of the firearm, people don't like the look of them.
