Looking to buy 7.62x54R brass for reload.

Where you are matters. Most shooters buy ammo and reload it. Norma appears to be the only option for new brass. Winchester did, but it's not on their site now.
 
I bought some Privi ammo about 10 years ago (500 rounds) and that has been my safely guarded brass supply. The brass is not as rare as hens teeth but damn close. I would take the same route. h t t p://psmilitaria.50megs.com/ammo.html has some ammo listed on their site now. You can also try the WTB on the EE forum.

When you get the brass, invest in a neck sizing die. I do mine in the lee load all as it was the only way to go with the lee equipment at the time.
 
Hirsh precision Shooting supplies has Lapua Brass for sale. I was thinking of maybe stock piling some for future, but I can still get Privi factory loads, and get brass that way.
 
You will want to double check this, however, I am fairly certain that you can use .308 Winchester ammunition in rifles that are chambered for 7.62x54mm but you can NOT use 7.62x54mm ammo in the .308 Winchester chambered arms. If that holds true, you should then be able to utilize .308 Winchester cases to reload. If memory serves, the 7.62x54mm cartridge has a different head on the case than the .308 Winchester and while the cartridges are pretty much interchangeable, the 7.62x54mm will not extract properly in the .308 Winchester rifles.

Again...Please varify this information before proceeding.

The Russian round is rimmed, the .308 is not.
The Russian round is wider at the base, and is a different bullet diameter as well.

I have both the 7.62x54mm and the .308 Winchester cartridges in my ammo lock-up. I'll have to run a mic over them real quick and see where the diference lies. Years ago, I put plenty of .308 Winchester down the pipe of an old Mossin Nagant. Now, I'm not saying that I'm right - just curious to investigate this further. I didn't just interchange these two rounds on a whim. One of the trusted, older chaps at the local sporting goods shop tipped me off to this when I was unable to find 7.62x54mm on the shelf. It doesn't mean he was right though. In any event - I was successful in feeding my Mossin Nagant with the more readily avaliable .308 Winchester ammo. At this point, however, I won't recommend it. Play safe and good luck!

I`m very surprised - you are still alive.....just let us know how your .308Win brass looked after you shot it in 7.62x54R chamber......would be fun to see some pictures.....

the .308 Win chamber accepts 7.62x51 (7.62NATO) ammo, but not other way....pressure issue - .308Win creates more pressure :)


for 7.62x54R brass - go with Lapua - for sure :)

While I can't recommend it, I just looked up the dimesions of each case in the Modern Reloading 2nd Edition manual and they are surprisingly similiar. The case length is the most drastic difference and that is pretty much all in the neck which wouldn't make that much of an issue I would think. If they were sized properly, it appears as though it may be plausable. Comments in reference to the case dimensions are appreciated. Has anyone else done this?

seems foolhardy. The x54R headspaces on the rim. The 308 has no rim. You're just asking for an accident

The 308 contacts the end of the chamber at the shoulder, and that's how it headspaces, and is able to resist the firing pin strike. The x54R is only held in the chamber by its rim, the shoulder usually doesn't contact the end of the chamber at all
 
Please!! do not ever interchange calibres!! Having said that, Lapua7.62X53R is useable in 7.62X54R chambers. Brass only, not ammo.
