Looking to Buy a NR Rifle

Apparently tactical imports is trying to get a non restricted FAMAE SG 542, how would this compare with current swiss arms rifles.

As far as I know, the FAMEA SG 542 discussed by Tactical Imports has a barrel lenght of 464mm, or 18.28", thus making it restricted based on barrel lenght.

If they are trying to import a 18.5"+ barrel model, then I'm out of the loop and missed that update!

I'm sure they wouldn't consider bringing them in with 465mm (standard length) barrels.

ACR. I like it but cost along with changing the barrel make it a very expensive firearm. I also like the standard forend over the enhanced version. I personally feel like the ACR still has a ways to go in terms of cost, availability, weight and a proven track record. The other three are based off military proven designs. On paper it's perfect but there are a few details that could use some work. I haven't shot one of these yet. I've only looked one over at the store.

What I like about the ACR is it's the closest to a non restricted AR from this group. Let's be honest if the AR wasn't restricted it would be the easy choice. At least for your first rifle.

I tend to agree. I factory NR ACR for around $2,500 would be a game changer. But as it is, it's close to $4k. Then you still need your optics and accessories... The Swiss Arms is nice, but also overpriced at close to $4k.

So my vote is still for a used Tavor, which you can typically get for well under $2,500. Honestly, with an AR - the whole appeal (for me) is the compact length. With no folding stock option, I would find an 18.5"+ version kind of unwieldy.

Configuration as shown. Bbl slightly longer ;)

It will be NON RESTRICTED, if approved

I would tend to agree with that, and both my Swiss Arms rifles have the stock lowers, and I have no plans to change that. The only real argument that could be made is that AR mags are cheaper and you can use the 10 round LAR-15 mags. Since neither of those things really matter to me, I'm happy with the Swiss (well, CanAm) rock in mags.

It's not much heavier than a 20" Colt HBAR, which is the best thing to compare it to. Removing the bi-pod helps.

Exactly. Too many people here compare its weight to M4geries and bullpups and then cry about it. Its a full size 20" barreled rifle people!! Full size rifles are NOT ideal for cqb.

surprised no one has mentioned the fn f2000, are they difficult/overpriced for NR?

Blaxsun is bang on price wise, and availability is also spotty. Questar will sometimes have them, but when they're out, it usually takes a while for them to get more.

I was thinking it might be possible to buy one in the states and have it rebarreled with a 19" .223 Wylde barrel and no threads/flash hider, then import it. Should make it easier to export without a 5.56 chamber and flash hider. I figure about $1500 for a lightly used rifle, then another $500 for a U.S. smith to make the barrel, then another couple of hundred to get it up here. That, and 6 months to 1 year to have everything done.

If you go that route, you should aim for 300BLK. :D

I think I've settled on the Swiss Arms Black Special, the durability and reliability is something that keeps drawing me to it, the polymer of the Tar/Sl8/F2000 although lightweight doesn't have the same feel. Now I have to figure out an optic, looks like I'll be starting up another thread in a few weeks.

If anybody has any suggestions, or things to watch out for in purchasing a used Black Special let me know. Thank you to everyone who chimed in.

A fine choice:D

If you think your primary sight will be an optic (Red dot, 1-4X scope) take a look at the target models, they come with a pic rail welded on top.
The diopter models always put your optic high due to mounting a scope mount and clearing the diopter drum necessitating the use of a cheek piece in most cases. The flat tops will put your optic right down on the receiver. They are available in Black and more recently green as well.
