looking to buy an AR

I own a Norc - if I had the ready cash at the time I bought it, I'd have bought a Stag. I would not have bought an M&P as I have seen BCG's not properly staked (even though I love S&W's and own 2 M&P pistols). Buying a Stag from ArmsEast is one of the safer bets in firearms purchasing (based on my having been here quite a while and having heard of precisely one issue - with a magazine). Given the amount of whine around here, that's a bloody miracle.
An improperly staked gas key is hardly a deal killer...

For that price range, I'd hunt around for an LMT if I could find one. STAG also makes a great product at substantially more attractive price points. I own both and they're excellent rifles. On the flip side, 2K would get you a gently used Colt AR-15 in the EE and case of ammo delivered to you door.

Just buy a Cq 556 for $699. The ar is a useless rifle in Canada, you can only shoot it at a Range so why spent top dollor on a rifle that serves no purpose.

Buy a Norrinco, and the rest spend on the ammo, cause that useless little plinker will chew through the ammo.

I preordered a Norinco Cq 556 , got to waste your money on something, but I'll be dammed to spend $2000 on a rifle that I can't use in the bush.

My limit for useless rifles is $699.......thank you Marstar.

When you can get a rifle with a properly staked gas key for $200 (ish) less it is. Hell, the Norc is staked properly for $900 less.
Frankly I wouldn't buy either so not much point in me disagreeing with you, let's just be friends! :D:p

Gotta' agree with you on the Colt or LMT. The OP seems to have a reasonable budget so why not use it. If he was limited to <$1K then I guess a umm... lower-tier might be a better answer.

All moot really, as soon as you buy one you'll want more and/or a better one! Screwed before you start, my friend! :D

Well it's certainly your right to speak for yourself, so I'll do the same and put in my 2cents.

My ARs have always got lots of use, they are decidedly not useless. The purpose they have, aside from creating large smiles, are to build shooting skills and improve my marksmanship. I also have the option of entering any number of matches, should I so choose. Are we limited in what we can do with ARs in Canada? Yes, but that doesn't make it a total boat anchor. Personally, I couldn't care less if I can take it in the bush, there are plenty of cheap bush guns in my safe for that. I wouldn't take a $2000 AR in the bush anyhow... this isn't 'The Nam'. :p

Note I am not arguing with you, just indicating you (nor I) don't speak for everyone and other folks find varied uses/ purposes for their ARs.
Cheers

You see , this is why i love CGN , and all you gunnuters........

We can , throw our 2 cents at eachother, make a bunch of one sided opinions, and who cares, cause at the end of they day were all a buch of firearm lover's ..........so come over here and plant a big wet one on the side of my uselesss AR Knockoff..........:adult:

oh ya, I think i need a little more:jerkit:

that's it , now some 10 rnd LAR mag's ... Yah..........

and yeah it makes everyone smile which is partially why i want one (and it pisses my dad off) and i dont want a norinco i dont trust them chinese built stuff probably be like my shoes and fall apart after some abuse and i wont be using it that much anyways plus ar's are just bad ass and i want one

An AR is an AR is an AR...in my limited experience anyways. I own or have owned products by Colt, Tactical Solutions, Armalite, Dlask/Blueline, LMT, RRA etc and I've shot many rounds through most of the common AR brands that I haven't owned. It is very difficult to pick out one or another as better or worse. As for value for your money, the Norc M4 is excellent, and compares with Imperial and Sabre products of double or more the price. The Colts and Armalites do have noticeable and measureable improvements in overall quality, but are not necessarily that much better in performance or especially in terms of fun.

Beware of the gun snobs. Price tag is not always a measure of performance and quality. The Norc M14 is an excellent example of what the Chinese have done right.

If only they could ensure that 1. the front sight is "truly: vertical 2. The rear sights are repeatable/consistent.

Then they will truly be even more of a bargain;)

As for AR's most major makers seem to be similar in performance. I am not sure I would get a Norinco just yet, as I would like to wait and see how their quality control is like.

yeah but in everything you get what you pay for and 700$ is pretty damn cheap to me... but i want to buy whats readay to buy not have my name on a waiting list for the norinco and if none are available ill just buy an upper and lower im not to picky i just want something reliable

I was all set on a non-res black rifle, but since I don't hunt regularly anyway (and if I went, I'd take my bolt), the AR is looking like a better and better option for me.

I've been doing a bit of reading, and it's still a bit much to really get everything without a bit of hands on, but what's looking good to me right now is an LMT lower, and a Yankee Hill Specter Black Diamond complete upper (though I'm having a hard time finding anyone who sells those in Canada, any hints?). Ultimately, I'd like to be able to switch configurations between a scoped long range rifle, a CQB with EOTech, and a carbine with an ACOG or similar. Getting the parts to change one rifle into any of these configurations makes more sense to me than getting three different rifles (plus there's the whole joy of assembling it each time).

Does anyone have any recommended further reading (preferably web, but book suggestions also welcome) so that by the time I can afford this, I'll at least have a half decent idea of what I'm doing?

Anyway, I feel more confident going into this knowing that there's knowledgeable people around here who have always been happy to answer my questions in the past, so thanks!

The last YH uppers I saw in Canada were at Fabsports (see top) - as far as further reading look at M4 Carbine.com and what is fondly (and not so fondly) known as ARF.com (AR15.com). You'll find that there are all kinds of opinions on the humble AR - ARF has some good reference material as does M4C. M4C tends to attract a rather more serious and sober crowd, who don't view their working tools as toys (and so is a great place to find out what is actually working and what isn't), while ARF attracts all kinds these days.
