I "settled" for a Nikon Prostaff 2-7 Shotgun scope for my 452 Standard. Nice and bright for the price, just the right magnification range, good eye relief, and 75yd parallax. It sits in the right spot for me, so it stays on the rifle. However, I now also have a 452 Scout, and I've tried a few different "no-cost" scopes (ie. extra scopes I have in the safe) on it, to no avail. The length and shape of the stock is different, so the ring height, scope weight and tube length, and eye relief play a part in trying to get it just right... I will likely end up splurging (in reference to my budget anyways...) on a Leupold VX-1 2-7x28 rimfire scope for the Scout.
All that just for this kernel of perhaps questionable wisdom: What works for others may not be right for you. You may have to try out a few different ring and scope combinations on your American before you get it just right for you.
By the way, good choice for a plinker - so don't settle for a crappy scope, or a nice scope that's does not suit your needs...
