A while back there was a discussion on proper fit for an SKS muzzle brake. The short version:

Slightly loose =bad
Really tight fit = not ideal, but workable
Slightly tight = ideal

So I had a slightly loose brake and I tried to MacGyver it with some aluminum tape inserts. It definitely improved the fit. I had to tap the brake on with a rubber mallet and medium force. This, however, did not hold. As soon as the barrel heated up, the adhesive liquefied and the brake ended up downrange.

After speaking with a local gunsmith about it, he said it is a common problem and he suggested 2 solutions:

1 - Insert a spring washer to fill the gap left at the end of the barrel
2 - Pinch the sides of the brake to increase tension

I'll fart around with these 2 ideas and let you know what I find.

It's the AK style pin on. Let me just clarify my previous statement by agreeing with you that tight is good, I simply meant that if the brake is so tight you need to grind it out, it's not ideal.

My brother in law and another friend has the same issues with the brakes.

Abit of build up tape (high heat electrical) on either side of the contact points shimmed it up and made it nice a snug

Ummm, why for a muzzle brake?
I personally find an SKS really sedate to shoot; recoilwise.
My kids do too.
Not trolling; real question.

Indeed a valid question. And the SKS is a pretty tame rifle, in terms of felt recoil. Simple answer: looks. I have 2 SKS, one I keep factory stock, the other is bubba'd... I mean "sporterized". What can I say? I like the Crapco add-ons.

I've fired both rifles with and without the brake. I notice very little difference. This is all about the aesthetic.

It is a valid problem for AK style pin on brake. I will try pop can shims...

Pop can shims? Never thought of that. Maybe a way to go as well. I'm going to start with the spring washer and pinching ideas first, if that fails I'll move down the line and keep you all posted.

Just put one of these on,(AK-style muzze brake). I found it too loose. I first pinched sides of the base in a bit. Then, when istalled, I put a piece of mild steel, shaped into a tiny wedge, between the brake and the sight base. After a check to make sure all was acceptably concentric, away we go. Shoots just fine.
Cheers!!

In the case of my sks, I used thr long clamped version. If it was loose at all, the accuracy fell by half. So I suggest going as "tight" as possible on the fit.

If it's already budda'd, why not tack weld the little bugger in place? Zsheeep.....Zsheeep,

If you're going to spend the time and money on devices such as this, install it properly where it won't come off or loosen. Anything loose on the muzzle can be very dangerous.

having that said, i wouldn't do break any of my SKS. It has no useful functionality and is a safety liability unless properly secured. The only difference you will notice, is that your rifle became very loud to shoot. Why bother?
