Guess?
Being a new hunter, I was just wondering if there is a glaring hole in the Tag system if one happens to "lose" their lottery drawn antler-less tag, or purchased Buck tag, or am I missing something (the latter being most likely)? If I take a deer with the appropriate tag in my possession, properly punching the time and date on the tag, and placing it on the antler or through the animals ear, yet never encounter a CO from harvesting to processing, could I go to the MNR claiming I lost my tag, pay $10 and get another tag? Could the MNR refuse you? I know a few guys who purchased tags before the season started, who only hunt in our WMU using Muzzle-loaders (work, family constraints), so it is completely conceivable that they could have legitimately lost their tags in the months prior to their hunt and need to replace them.

It seems to me that this could be done quite easily with the current system. Illegally of course.

Please do not misconstrue this post as anything but an honest question. I am not condoning this. I have truly fallen in love with Hunting and want to ensure I/We can continue to do so for years to come.

Thanks!

33 views and nothing eh? I guess this hole wasn't so apparent to everyone after all and I revealed a dirty little secret...

It's simply boils down to personal integrity and a desire to do what's right ...... things aren't always designed to be anti-fraud type of affairs.

Okay thanks. I figured as much, but I was kind of hoping I was wrong. Like common sense, integrity is not so common these days.

berger, you probably have a very valid point, and the dishonest of the population have most likely figured it out and are yearly abusers. An accurate answer to your question would best be obtained from a CO. Don't go giving them any bright ideas though as they are very capable in inventing complicated mounds of red tape all on there own.

So someone could get away with one occurrence, or couple, but I hope there is a data base where COs can keep taps on what goes where and why

Personally hunting is too important to me to try to screw the system for extra tag, it does come down to ethics and integrity

I completely agree, and I would have thought a better system would have been put in place at the get go.

I legitimately lost my tag last fall prior to deer season, went to the MNR, told them I lost it, signed some papers, paid a couple dollars, and was on my way out with a new tag. It seemed all too easy and I could see how many people could take advantage of such a system.

The sad thing is that you legitimately lost your tag, but others will claim they lost it and use it without being checked or noticed and abuse the system. I'm sure the MNR knows people do this and probably keep track of just how many "replacement" tags they have to give out, and who knows, maybe that plays a role in the following years draw results in certain areas?

I'm lucky (not really, never took more than 1 deer in a season) that in my BOW ONLY area that for as long as I can remember they have additional Doe tags, and you can buy as many as 6 per hunter for a total of 7 tags for the season. These tags are first come first serve and sometimes they sell out, some times they dont.

I lost my duck lic. last year and went out and paid another $20 for a second one, wouldnt you know it, some time in February I stumbled across the one I lost.....

I did actually loose mine once. Went to MNR office and reported it, they gave me a replacement tag, and cancelled my old tag in the computer. Free of charge other then the craty attitude of the lady behind the counter.

Yes it can happen. But if you do that your nothing but a poacher. Some provinces make you register your deer at a registration station such as NB.

we lost a tag this year.
3 guys hunting ( 1 newbie) .
2 deer down opening morning, both tagged and gutted (1 tag left)
Tag ripped from the does ear on the drag back, newb wasn't paying attention.
he searched the field 3 times over, couldn't find tag.
i had to use my tag on the same deer.
made it a pretty short hunt, and a pretty loud ride home.

I knew a few farmers that would buy two deer licences every year before thy were in the computers .thy would put in for the draw for the first controlled hunt and then buy a farmers tag for the second hunt .it worked for a few years but the mnr did catch on and thy lost there hunting lic for one year .now every think is in the computer there is still ways to cheat but with all the extra tags for the last few years only a poacher would want to cheat anyway .and you will never stop them anyway .Dutch

Before you used the tag you should have called the MNR and explained the situation. If they weren’t in leave them a message to call you explaining the situation. This way you have informed them to the problem you ran into and if they popped up you could tell them you left them a message explaining the situation. When we take the head off we keep the tags but no longer have anywhere to attach it. When we take the deer in to the butcher I usually leave the tags at the house or cottage. We have never been checked by the MNR with a deer so I don’t know what they would do at the point of having the carcass ready for the butcher and no tag.
