WINNIPEG — A hunter who turned up after being lost in the southeast Manitoba bush for three weeks says thoughts of his family and the hundreds of people who were looking for him kept him going.

“(It was) my wife and my son and the knowledge that the search and rescue community and people I don’t even know were out looking,” said Brad Lambert, who turned up safe and sound Saturday after 21 nights in the bush.

“That means a great deal.”

Lambert, 46, had been last seen Nov. 15 when he stopped to buy supplies for a deer hunting trip southeast of his Winnipeg home.

Things went off the rails when a “wrong turn on the wrong trail” left him stuck and stranded in the middle of nowhere.

When he didn’t return home, the search began.

Police and hundreds of volunteers scoured the densely forested area. Aircraft were called in.

Residents and business owners throughout Manitoba and Ontario were asked to check any buildings such as outdoor sheds, abandoned structures and garages on their properties.

Meanwhile, Lambert said he did what he could to survive. Although he had no food and ate nothing during the entire ordeal, he was able to melt snow for drinking water.

No ill effects. I’m eating, I’m hydrated and just enjoying being with my family

And he did his best to aid searchers.

“Daytime was spent building signal fires, walking through an expansive marsh trying to flag aircraft with my blaze orange hunting gear and trying to be noticed,” he said.

“I could see some planes. At night there were some aircraft as well.

“Unfortunately, I guess they couldn’t see me. It had to be a 10-20 square kilometre open meadow with bluffs — it would be extremely difficult to locate from the air one person.

“At times, it was very disheartening.”

Eventually, Lambert realized he had to set out.

He thrashed his way through heavy bush until he came to a trail, then followed the trail until it came to a road.

“I was found on the road.”

Lambert says he feels fine, although he is tired.

“No ill effects. I’m eating, I’m hydrated and just enjoying being with my family.”

He said he just wants everyone who helped with the search to know how thankful he is.

“It was a very emotional time and it still is. I’m just grateful to everyone involved.”

Good to see that he made it back okay.

Though, is it just me who thinks that's the least successful hunt they've ever heard of? Not only did he not get the game he was looking for, but eating nothing but snow for 21 days? Sounds like game was incredibly scarce, or Lambert just had some incredibly bad luck with his gear and preparation.

What? he was hunting but he couldn't find a squirrel or a bunny in three weeks? Glad he made it home, but... you gotta wonder what went on?

He probably left the house with all of his hunting gear, drove to the airport and got on a plane for two weeks of hookers and blow in Vegas. Came back and got a buddy to drop him off on a backroad and waited to be "found." Best hunting trip ever.

Makes no sense, after a week of no food I would shoot and eat almost anything, there were no beavers in that marsh?

Quiet! That's the sh!t story I pull on my old lady from time to time! :xes

Just saw an interview, he said his truck was stuck, out of gas, cell phone dead. Spent the days making signal fires and nights sleeping in his truck. Then walked several miles back to the road where somebody picked him up. Sounds to me like he got stuck and was afraid to leave sight of his truck for 20 days.

X2
3 weeks come on, how dumb could one man be?

I think after about two weeks I'd be wondering just how tasty willow branches taste. start acting like a moose haha.. unbelievable he want able to shoot anything at all in 3 weeks. Still, good to hear he made it home.

Nobody knows the real story but yet some guys are already throwing insults ...what a place.
On a positive note....glad to hear he that are fellow sportsman is alive and well.

Happy ending, and a lesson for the future: carry a compass at the very least, and if you can't bring a map with you, at least look at one before setting out!!

Something doesn't sound straight with this story. Wearing blaze orange, able to start fires, could see planes, but them not he?? Finally, either it was an old photo of him or he looked quite "plump" in the face for someone who lived on the land for 3 weeks. The stress of being lost that long alone would wear you out. I call Bull Sxxt!
