Lost hunters use moose hide to keep warm

Western Newfoundland couple followed trail of young animal's blood

A western Newfoundland couple used the hide of a freshly killed moose overnight Tuesday to keep warm after getting lost in the woods during a hunting trip near Gros Morne National Park.

Stephen and Sheila Joyce said they lost their way after wounding a young moose and began following the trail of its blood.

Shivering and soaking wet, they eventually caught up with the wounded animal.

“My wife thought it would be a good idea to skin the calf and we could use the skin as a blanket. Then we found a place under the root of a tree,” said Joyce

By morning, they were weak and scared.

“It was quite horrific. We really were expecting the worst for a period of time there and we really didn’t know what would happen. The direction we were going was the wrong one,” he said.

He said hope that they would find their way home safely was fading when they heard gunshots in the distance.

Joyce said he fired back in reply.

The shots were from searchers who lit a fire in hopes the lost couple would spot the smoke.

They eventually met up with Joyce, but said that by then, he was so weak that he had to be carried out of the woods.

Back at home, the couple said they want to thank everyone who helped them survive the ordeal.

“We really, really appreciate the effort that was put into ... well, preserving us from perishing in the woods.”

Awesome tale but I am tryng to figure out why the fellow was so weak after only one night in the bush was he in really bad shape or was he packing out the moose?

Know your terrain, direction is easy to determine by day or night and always bring a means of emergency comms. Piss poor palnning and woodsmanship in my opinion.

Also, wicked thread title!

You're joking, right?

I go with friends hunting west of Edmonton into the foothills and can't get a cell signal half the time.

I don't see Gros Morne being a hot bed of cell towers.

SPOT or a PLB would be a better bet if you want a lifeline.

Depends on the phone for the past couple of years they have mostly had real GPS. I normally have both my phone and my spot.

I think the moral of the story is how guns can save lives!

They heard the gun shots, fired to catch their attention and fired back in response. Left to their weakened states and tired cold lungs... they were saved.

Theres a positive spin.

What is a SPOT?

What is SPOT?
Spot is a Satellite Messenger device that can dispatch emergency responders to your GPS location. It let's your contacts know where you are and that you are OK. It allows you to send and save your location so that your contacts can track your progress on Google Maps. For non-emergency situations you can request help from your friends and family (contacts) and they will know where you are and your current situation.

Nothing like climbing into a damp moose hide. I could pretty comfortably sleep in my camo alone for a night. Actually, with a little fire and roast of fresh moose calf it could be a pretty good night in the woods. He even had the wife along for a little lovin after the dinner date. :D

All in all a pretty sad attempt at survival.
