lots of SKS's

I don't feel so bad then. My SKS is in awesome condition, with a small wleding pin on the mag follower. Still wound't hurt to have a $199 beater/parts Russian.

absolutely , if you already got a collector then you should at least have one shooter .... or two collectors and two shooters . :D

Not just a fun plinker, but also an excellent and affordable hunting rifle. Only if there were more soft point 7.62 x 39 available at a reasonable price, SKS’s would have been the best value bush/white-tail gun around. After 4-5 months of shooting my two, I am convinved that at 100 yards and under, iron sited SKS,s are just as good and as effective as any $1000 scoped rifle.

Yup I have been thinking the same as has lots of whitetail hunters in the US.
Soft point ammo for reloading is available.

Hey Curtton...

I was looking at the picture of the Issued Accessories. I did not know that a Canadian pen was issued to the troops back in the 50's. Nice how they recognized Canada back then...

glad ya noticed the canadian flag pen in my pics. thats my trade mark . :D

i figured since we are the new kid in the block when it comes to russian SKS , i dont mind sharing pics as long as they know where it can from . go canada , go canucks !!!

Great advise.

Oh no, Curtton`s extensive article on the SKS has done it again. I got myself another SKS. Sold my `56 to a good friend who has no time to go to the dealer. Thought I would be content with my remaining `53 but after spending last night reading all the blogs, couldn`t help myself. Found a `52 with a laminated stock and bit the bullet - again!!!! Will be bringing both to the range this weekend to sight. Levers now has 4 1/2 full cabinets w/ SKS`s. All registered and ready to go. I was there for an hour and they sold 8 including mine. No need to panic, they`ve got tons in inventory and more awaiting future shipments from the Eastern bloc. BTW, customer service was excellent today. Must be the sunny weather or is it the brisk sales? ! Should my babies group decently will take C`s advise and save my coin for 2 more!

the top one i presume is the 52 , i cant see from the pic but does it have a slanted or curve gas block?

nice looking refurb , black bayo and lam stock , how cant you lose with a lam ? i remembered the stock alone was selling for $75 in 2007.

Gentlemen, being an SKS newb and unable to pick through the pile at Lever, what would be the most desireable characteristics to request when I phone an order in?

1) Unpainted bolt
2) Laminated stock

Anything else?

I am wanting a shooter, so the finer details of collector interest can be left to chance for my purposes.

Thanks,
Mark

I`m an oldie with guns but a newbie to the SKS. Strongly suggest you read Curtton`s article on SKS history first. Then, create some time if you are in BC and actually visit the store to choose your shooter. You can eliminate future gunsmith adjustments should you find one with decent rifling and a smoother action. It took me 4 visits to find my 2. A lot of good and bad mixed in the display.

Hello C, Info on the Black bayo (top) was sent in on your survey of `53`s. Has a Type 3 block (so does the `52). The nice compliment coming from the SKS guru. Man, that feels good!
Ever thought of doing a BC SKS event at the range? You can count me in as well as 2 of my SKS buddies. My friend who bought my `56 has 4 of them. A Yugo, a Norinco, Tula`55, Tula`56. Am convincing him to join CGN, if just to read your write-up and Blackthorne`s. Saw an ISH at Lever`s which looked rough from looking through the glass. Did`nt bother to handle - limit of three only so had to pick the cherries first. Just goes to show if one goes to shop with the proper info, there are good ones to be found. If mine group well, am going to share the info on CGN.

you can strip the paint off the bolt so do not make that your request.

Nice picks, i like the black bayo and lam too. I pick up 3 real nice ones too, one of them is mint not a mark on the stock and the paint wasnt all patchy and runny . Go there on a weekday after they eat lunch and you can pick through the entire inventory.

Mmatto, take it from me and Tattolie. It will be worth your effort to go and pick one out. I`m willing to help a fellow CGN`r choose one so let`s go and get your shooter. Mmmm, T has three nice ones. Am now tempted to keep up.
