Hey guys,
Looking for a decent LPVO to put on a Tavor 7.
The area I live in has a lot of hills so I think a 1-6 power should be fine, Something around 1k price range would be nice but more for the right thing is ok.
I'm sort of new to LPVO's so any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

More importantly, what are you using the Tavor for? If you are just hicking around the hills in your back yard and you just wanted something with quick accusition for training, target practice and protection then you need a LVPO with a LER. If you are planning to hunt with it then you need something with a SER. The majority of LVPO comes in SER but a little more difficult to find in LER and in a 30mm at that. I hope that you are looking for a 30mm? I don't run my LVPOs any more. They just sit on the shelf after I discovered the world of magnifying red dots. They do everything a LVPO does but better and in a smaller lighter package. For more magnification, I just install a 1x7 or 3x9 short scope with a 32 objective which is the same size as a LVPO but with much better manification. LVPOs are kinda in limbo land because there are so much better options which is why there isn't a single person who I know who still uses a LVPO but if that is what you prefer, I would be the first to encourage it. One can say that LVPOs are becoming the key-mod of the scope world.
 
That's interesting, what kind of red dots are you talking about? Is it just a standard zero magnification with a flip up magnifier behind it?
This is just for quick acquisition for training and plinking etc. Can you recommend some good brands/ models to get an idea? Much appreciated!

I am in the same boat as you. Switching optics is easy.

Honestly I think the LPVO's have a justification in a military environment but not for recreational shooters. I am either using a red dot or a scope with 4-16x. Heck, even my Vortex Diamondback Tactical 3-9 does everything better than a $1K LVPO.

I had a trijicon credo 1-8 and loved it, but the tavor 7 plus a lpvo is not really light. I switched to a eotech and 3x magnifier and absolutely love it. I would say get a 5x magnifier if you want to spend the coin
 
I love my Steiner 4xi. I'd definitely recommend as far as quality and glass quality goes. I've really enjoyed all of my Steiner optics.

Pricier but worth it imo. The make a 1-6 lpvo as well.

Ive got several LPVO's however they are all greater value than your budget. I did however have a Vortex Viper 1-6 Gen 2 for a short while. Day light bright reticle and really clear glass for the money. This would be a viable options. You can prob score one on the EE or gunpos t for like 700 ish

Agreed. I just cringe sometimes at the responses you see here, haha. The statement that magnified red dots "do everything a LPVO does but in a lighter and small package" is just... painful to read. I have most conceivable optic setups (including higher mag LPVOs (1-8 and 1-10) and magnified red dots) and LPVOs are probably the most versatile choice there is. The good designs all have daylight bright red dots that are almost as fast (or as fast) as a red dot at 1x but when zoomed in have clearer glass than a magnifier and a much better, well-defined reticle for wind holds when shooting at distance. Engagements out to 500 are definitely possible with a magnified red dot (especially with a 6x magnifier) but on larger targets and in calmer conditions (because of the lack of reticle for wind precise wind holds). Life is easier with an LPVO.

All my LPVOs are higher cost as well but I've used the Viper 1-6 and it is a great value.
 
I put a Bushnell SFP 1-8 LPVO on my Tavor 7 initially. It was alright, but honestly the T7 is not so accurate that it really "deserves" 8x magnification, particularly with the weight penalty. I went with a Primary Arms 3x prism scope. It is much lighter and more functional. Easy hits on 8" steel out to 300m, standing unsupported. I have an Eotech 512 floating between guns, I might consider using that with a 5x magnifier, but I would want to consider the weight again. Maybe I should just go to the gym...
 
Might want to look at Leupold VX-3HD 1.5-5 with cds-zl1 turret with zero lock and twilight hunter firedot reticle. Shake to wake fire dot shuts off when not being used. A bit more traditional reticle, not a bunch of lines to clutter it up. Simple. Comes with an MOA dial and get a free custom dial. 1.5 power seems closer to 1 power to me.
I’m a hunter and used to multi-x style reticle so it just feels right. Can’t go wrong with a Leupold in my opinion.
Love it on my ruger GSR. Will be getting another one for my raven.

It is a heavier package so I'm wondering if the weight savings with a red dot will be worth it or not? Is the eye relief on a 5x magnifier much worse compared to the 3x for more dynamic shooting? I tried a LPVO out and really liked it too...tough choice. there's a lot of hills where I live so honestly I doubt I'll be reaching out much past 300yards.

3.5x acog with a offset micro red dot is nice, lighter too.

Go with the LPVO. Yes, it's heavier, but you can handle it. Get a good sling. If you find that the extra weight is just not worth it, you can always go lighter with a red dot and magnifier. I think you'll find the whole moving the magnifier to the side, trying to line it up with the red dot and your eye, will get tired quickly. Said another way, the LPVO does everything a red dot and magnifier can do, but the reverse, finicky.
 
Is a red dot + magnifier really any lighter than an LPVO?



I've watched a lot of combat footage from Gaza and none of the IDF soldiers are running magnified optics. They are almost universally using non-magnified red dot sights.

One thing to remember is that if you use a magnifier with a red dot it also magnifies the dot size i.e. a two inch dot with be a six inch dot with a 3x magnifier. However this is not the case if you use a magnifier with a holographic sight like the eotech, where the dot size does not change. Another option to consider if you are bothered about weight are prism scopes. Also red dots can be an issue if you have astigmatism issues with your eyes i.e. no longer looking at a dot but more like a star burst!
