Hey, my friend just won a raffle for a Ruger Mini-14 Target Rifle with the black laminated thumbhole stock.

He entered a raffle at The Gun Centre at Lovett's in Kitchener a few times after making some purchases. What a score.

He just stopped over at my shop on the way home after picking it up happier than a pig in slop. Lucky hog.

It's a nice rifle for sure. Looks well built. A bit heavy, but I couldn't put it down.

Kudos to the guys at The Gun Centre for such a raffle.

I was too envious to think of taking some actual photos while he was here.

What do you guys think of this model? Has a hammer forged barrel and an adjustable harmonic dampener for tuning minute of angle accuracy and came with Ruger scope rings. He bought a 3-9x40 Bell scope for it too.

Anyone have a chance to try any of the recent production Mini-14 models? Any feedback?? I'd like to pass on some info to him if I can. Any tips on the harmonic dampener?

Maybe find him a few full size magazines too if anyone here has any to part with.

I have fired that rifle a few times as my friend has one. I love Mini's. The target model was definitely a bit heavy for carrying around but I really liked it. Accuracy seemed great, though we were shooting pop cans and various items between 75-150 yards. I have a newer model ranch rifle and I just sighted it in with my 3-9x and it seem way better than the older model I upgraded from. At 50 yards I hit the target twice in the same spot and the rest of the group was tight.

You are right about them being well built. Bomber steel used all around and the action is durable and pretty much idiot proof.

Lucky guy indeed.

Some advice i have to offer is dont sit next to him at the range. Those things fling brass HARD and never in the same spot LOL

Guys who play with handloads and the dampener have reported sub MOA accuracy.

Not my cup of tea....but its not a remington so go hard! :50cal:

Good score! if it was me that thing would be on the EE already

I love the looks, and the wood on the stock is gorgeous... except the shape of it leaves something to be desired. I would love to see that in a conventional laminate stock in the same color.

Harmonic dampener is a 'biatch'

After a couple years of dinkin around with reloads/bullet weights, and where to put that freakin dampener, I finally got mine to settle in to sub moa at 100 yds. For my rifle, the dampener is turned down (from where the dampener is flush with the barrel) half a revolution for the 55 gr. bullets. And for heavier bullets, (68/69 gr.) the dampener is turned down .589 inches from the top. The little bolts tend to loosen up after a few shots, so remember to tighten them up. At 200 yds, the shots do open up, and become a little unpredictable, but still my rifle prints 2 inches at 200 yds. Good luck, and tell your buddy congratulations. It is a great coyote rifle.

If the brass is going too far it's really easy to take off the gas block and change out the factory "nozzle" for one with a smaller hole. I changed mine out and it throws brass 4 ft and cycles perfectly. I have a ranch and its just plain fun!
