These stories absolutely kill me.
Grandpa's guns were important to him, or he wouldn't have held on to them. They have history and meaning to him, and should have equal meaning to his kids and grandchildren if they have any sense of familial unity.
Turning guns into the police for destruction is as simple-minded and coarse as taking Grandma's china out to the driveway and stomping it into dust, or crushing her silver in a press, or burning her wedding dress using the family photos as kindling. It's an affront to the people one claims to honour and love, and theft from those who would come after.
There is no clearer, more straightforward way to say "f**k you, Grandpa" than to turn his guns over to a government agency for destruction.
Think about that for a minute. How comfortable would you be with looking your grandfather square in the eye and saying "f**k you, old man. The things you found important are nothing to me. Your legacy is meaningless. The things that may remind your great-grandchildren of who you are and what you did are nothing to me." If someone would not be comfortable saying that nose-to-nose with their grandfather or grandmother or mom or dad, then they shouldn't be a chickens**t and say it after he or she is dead.
Pass the word. Preach the gospel. No firearms are to be turned in to the police for destruction if there's ever - EVER - an alternative. Their destruction is immoral. Save every single one you can, from the humblest rusty single-shot Cooey to the most beautiful 100% mint Artillery Luger. Don't let the soulless bureaucrats touch any of 'em.
