Luvin' the pump action rifles

Glad there are other .22 pump fans. My second .22 as a kid was a Winchester 62A... great gun with the visible hammer. In the 50's & 60's, the cowboy shows on TV seduced me into having a lever action. When I discovered a used Marlin Mountie at the Hudson Bay store (yes, the Bay sold guns!) I couldn't afford two guns on my meagre paper route money, so I had to trade my Win. 62 to afford the Mountie. Still have the Mountie after 56 yrs. and have re-acquired a few Win. 62As and 61s. Also have a collection of the various Rossi's (carbines, long barrels, octogonal barrel, .22 mag, etc.). The Browning Trombones I have are sweet little pumps but my favorites are the visible hammer model pumps. I have had the deluxe Fieldmasters however the Remingtons went to new homes as they didn't feel as comfortable as my other pumps. The plus for the Remingtons was being able to scope them. Some of my 61s and Trombones are grooved so I still have a scope option for a .22 pump.

This thread is almost two years since the last story... anymore .22 pump fans want to add their stories?
One of the guns I let get away was a Remington Fieldmaster. I killed a lot of ground hogs and squirrels with it. I wanted a center fire varmint gun and had to sell it to fund that purchase . Still regret selling it 35 years later!

I swear if I didn’t have a son my dad would be buried with his Remington 572 field master! It was his first purchase when he was 18 way back in the 80’s. He foolishly sold it when he started a family, But through a twist of fate he was able to buy it back almost ten years later!

That .22 must have taught over 20 people on how to shoot.

.22 pumps were one of my first love of guns and I was able to buy 2 of them so far. The first is a winchester model 90 in long cartridge only. 1930’s is it’s year and holding/firing it is truly amazing! The look, the feel, and with octagonal barrel, the weight is surprising (heavy) being a smaller rifle. I Haven’t shot it much as ammo is scarce. My next pump I bought from a friend is an early ‘20’s fn trombone. This lr has been shot a lot more and is equally as fun to shoot. I’ve been contemplating on selling one of these rifles to fund another project but talking and reading about these guns, make me second guess this decision and I’ll be taking these out of the safe soon for some gopher fun!!

My fieldmaster after partial restore.

That's a fine looking rifle. The Remington might be the only pump 22 I've yet to try, but as much as I love the look/idea of shooting these pumps...I just can't seem to love any gun with a tube mag. lol Threads like these get me wondering though.. The only ones I've owned were a Henry (poorly thought-out design if you ask me, but a handsome rifle) and a Taurus SAC.

I have a 572 and it feels great in the hands. It's a long gun, but well balanced and not heavy. The action is super-slick too. I'd take it to the range more often if it took detachable mags, but I think we're in the minority in that regard.

My first range trip with it, a slip during loading sent the mag follower arcing 2 meters past the firing line.

I've got a mint Rossi 37 pump with octagon barrel. Love the rifle. I've put about 30000 rounds thru it. It's no tack driver but it takes everything except cb and bb caps. I keep looking at the Henrys though. Once my projects get done I think I'll pick one up
Can't go wrong with a HENRY,,

I’ve got both.
Remington is number 1 is a grownups gun, feels like a centre fire.
The Henry must be “shucked” with authority and can be a nuisance if a quick accurate 2nd shot is needed

ive got a .22 savage oct barrel pump that uses a clip.. its the only one I know of that doesn't use a tube mag... was made up till 1920 I believe I don't rmbr how to upload pics on here

Just got a new one to add to the collection,
Thanks again leeta, great looking savage 29b..
Great condition for a pump action that wares quickly, not the best design to lock the bolt forward.
Out of all the pump guns I have , these savages shoot , most ammo consistently.. very nice bore..

I have a short barrel Rossi pump that hooked my son on shooting. He shot other rimfires and liked it but when he first used that pump when he was around 14 his eyes lit up and the first words out of his mouth were "Wow Is This Ever Fun!"

On this topic I like to look at photos of those old carnival shooting galleries.

Take note of the sign above the gallery in this photo. That was a time when marksmanship skills were regarded as useful to possess.

BTW, I posted last summer about how I grabbed bunch of cheap 22 ammo and took out my pump Rossi, Browning SA22, Win 94/22, Erma MI carbine copy, and Rem Nylon 12 and spent the better part of an afternoon plinking at some tin cans and felt like I was a young lad with my father again. :)
