I've got a bit of a thing for pump action rimfire rifles. As in 3 Remington 12's, a couple of Stevens Visible Loaders and a newer Rossi 62 copy of the old Winchester 62.

Yesterday I thought it would be fun to shoot my club's Speed Steel match with the Rossi. It was like reliving the days at the PNE and the shooting galleries that they had. The only downside is that the targets weren't ducks and they were not swimming from side to side on the tracks like the galleries.... :d

The rifle was superbly fun to shoot. My times for the 5 targets were in the mid to high 4's for the wider spaced sets and on a couple of the stages with close spaced targets I got into the mid to high three's on a few runs. My best was a 3.44 seconds to raise the rifle for the sight picture and get off the 5 shots. I was pretty stoked at that.

It was raining cats and dogs during the match and we don't have covered shooting sheds at the pistol bays where we held the match. So the rifle is still half apart while the Minwax tung oil I've applied to the insides of the wood parts dries before I put it back together. But I'll post a picture or three once it's all in one piece again sometime tomorrow.

Please feel free to share your love and pics of your rimfire pump rifles. Let's show the rest of them what they are missing.

I've never met a "pump-action" I didn't like…..A short bbl Rossi would be a nice find.
"Vintage" Remington 572 BDL Deluxe Fieldmaster.

I've got a mint Rossi 37 pump with octagon barrel. Love the rifle. I've put about 30000 rounds thru it. It's no tack driver but it takes everything except cb and bb caps. I keep looking at the Henrys though. Once my projects get done I think I'll pick one up

I'm lovin' that Fieldmaster there JohNTO. And such a pristine example too!

I really like my Remington 12's but the three I've got all have serial numbers that peg them as being older than 100 years for two and around 80 for the other. And the guns from that production time have a known issue with modern HV ammo. So while I enjoy them and keep a stock of SV and Subsonic around for them I'd love to find a Fieldmaster so I can shoot whatever cheaper HV ammo I find out there. I'm keeping my eyes open for a Fieldmaster but so far no luck. Not even any over priced ones! :d Someday though.

Brybenn, I'd do some research into the Henry pump rifles before I leap. I've not read a lot of great things about the smoothness of the pump action Henrys. Something about trying to adapt the lever action internals over to a pump activated version didn't work out from the impressions I get.

The field masters have a very short stroke. The Rossi's are fun guns as well with the brass raining down from above.... :)

johNTO.....You are bringing tears to this old mans eyes....Had a 572 for about 10 years,...Way back in the mid 70ies and early 80ies....in a moment of stupidity I traded it of on a Browning Lever 22....The pain of that transaction has never gone away....that Rem pump would shoot 1/4" groups at 50 yards with just about any ammo other then CCI Stingers...but Yellow Jackets or CCI Mini Mags HP's it loved. Only other gun I still regret selling is a Browning Trombone...But damn I wish I could have my original Rem 572 back.

Jim

I also love the older pumps, use to hunt gophers with grandpa and his Browning trombone all the time, wish I could talk my uncle out of that gun.

Anyway, this is what I have for .22 pumps, in no particular order of what one I like best.

1950 Winchester 61
1975-85??? Rossi 62 sac in nickel
1953 Winchester 62A with the long flat bottom pump handle
1941 Winchester 62A with the long round pump handle

Also not pictured I recently picked up a 1938 Winchester 62 with the short cigar shaped pump handle.

I have a Savage Model 170 in 30-30 that my dad used to carry in his highway patrol car. Weird design, but I'll never part with it.

The ones I've handled were all smooth. Not as smooth as my Rossi or Ithaca 37 shotguns but they lacked thousands of rounds thru them. I'll keep this in mind though

I cut my teeth on a Rossi 62 sac like seen in the picture it was once stolen from me and the but stock cut off now i have to make a new one for it. Love all the rimfire pumps...matter of fact never sold one I've bought yet.

I have a Henry octagon-barrel pump.
.........................sorry guys, but I just can't find the love for it. I've had it for about 9 years and have only put about 200 rounds through it.
Really like my Henry lever-action though

Had a Browning pump, like the Rem it had a very short throw. To me they were to short and uncomfortable, I sold both. That said I am trying to get a Trombone from a buddy. Hard to find a 22 that is not fun to shoot.

When i was a kid i saved lawn and allowance money. Bought a remington "Nylon 66", what a POS. POI change every time you picked it up. So i sold it to my uncle, and bought a Rem 571, but the standard model, not the deluxe.

That one is at the top of my "never sell" list. Bluing rubbed off, alder scratches, wears a straight 2.5 scope now off a 375 H&H. Much more accurate than any semi i have ever tried, and not much slower. Two pins to remove 90% of the guts for simple cleaning.

I used a pump .22 way back when I was in hunters safety and loved it. I bought a 572 fieldmaster off an old guy about ten years ago and I havent used it much actually. I just find the 10/22 to be much more fun now.

Saskboy i went the same as you i had a basic fieldmaster, played around with it and all i shoot now for rimfires is my 10/22's. I dont regret selling it but would jump at a BDL with the high sights if it was up for a steal.

My fieldmaster after partial restore.
