Just arrived today: Lyman 6th Edition Shotshell Reloading Handbook.

I like having a print manual near the bench when reloading, so had to add it to the collection. Been going over it this afternoon. Lots of good data included in this edition.

Including non-toxic shot loads, ie: Hevi Shot and Bismuth (Bismuth shot loads part of a recent conversation on this forum). Found a couple of my favourite,
1-1/8-oz Bismuth loads in there, already. So, off to a great start.

Also: Steel shot , buck shot and plenty of good slug data. Load data also includes Hodgdon's new: Perfect Pattern shotshell powder. Clean burning and a good performer. Excellent, in 7/8 and 1-oz loads.

Very comprehensive, overall. Data ranging from 10 gauge, down to 410. So covers pretty well every reloading need. Plus, an extensive section on reloading basics, ballistics, etc. A good resource for reloaders at any level.
The manual is well laid out, with each section colour coded, for easy access. Very easy to navigate.

Ordering is pretty straightforward. Simply call Lyman Customer Service number: 1 800 225 9626. Manual arrived in about two weeks.

Well worth checking out, in my view.

I've been waiting for this for quite some time as the older manual is mostly out of date regarding available components
supposed to be more data using cheddite primers and hulls plus the newer powders that are available
Does any shop have it yet or do you have to get it direct from Lyman?
 
Deathrawt: To my knowledge, the manual isn't available in shops, yet. I ordered via 'phone. The process only took a few minutes. Manual arrived in a couple of weeks.

Lots of updated info, in the manual. Including data for Rio hulls. Plus, Cheddite, and Fiocchi. As well as the standards: Federal, Remington, Winchester, etc. So, plenty of data to choose from. Cheddite primers included in data, too.

Also, data for non-toxic shot, including Hevi-Shot, and Bismuth. Plus, steel.

Load data for Hodgdon's new: Perfect Pattern powder, too. Been loading some already. Mostly 7/8 and 1-oz loads. . Good performance, so far. Have 3/4-oz wads...so intend to try out some of those loads, too. Anyway, I like it.

I am still working my way through the data. But, what I've seen so far, is solid. Makes a good addition to the collection.

I have Lyman 1st, 4th and 5th shotshell reloading manual and have not been thrilled with them due to (i) no Lee slug data (kinda obvious why), (ii) no Challenger/Cheddite data (if I recall), and (iii) no powder like Winchester AA Superhandicap powder (I have a big jug of this).

Pleased to see that Cheddite data is now present (including cheddite primers - I have a few thousands of those)
 
wasa: I was disappointed to see that Super Handicap powder doesn't show up in the Lyman data, either. Don't know why. I use a fair bit of it. It's one of my personal favourites, for hard-hitting, 1-oz loads. Can easily duplicate Light Handicap factory loads.

If you can get your hands on a copy of the Hodgdon Basic Reloading Manual, there is good Super Handicap load data in there. That's where I source mine.

Likewise: Lee Drive Key slug data (Lee Precision data) is available online. So not a total loss, there.

I like and use a lot of Challenger(Cheddite) hulls, too. Especially, with 1 1/8-oz field loads. So, was happy to see load data included in the new Lyman manual. Cheddite primers seem to be fairly easy to source, too(at least locally). So this does open up some new possibilities.

Colin_in_Ottawa: There is. 572 is listed as one of the powder options for 1 1/4-oz and up 12 gauge loads, in Cheddite hulls. Also Rio and Fiocchi.
What in particular are you looking for?

I,ve been loading a LOT of challengers the past 6 or 7 yrs...the hull barrels are full of them. So much so, I bought the "CHEDDITE" manual from BPI. It's a great addition to my manual collection. This manual will definitely scratch your cheddite/challenger itch for you !
 
Thats good to hear 572 is listed. I like to roll my own 1 1/4 field loads and buckshot. 12G and 20G - I also load a lot of roundball in 20 and 12 plus Lee 7/8oz slugs in 12g. I used to use a lot of Bluedot and Herco but who can find that now! Now its HS6, 572 and Longshot
 
DarkSyd: The Lyman manual contains no 12 gauge load data for 2 -2 1/2" shells. However, there is a good selection of data in the online: Hodgdon Reloading Data Center. So between the two sources, there's plenty to work with.

Edit: Good slug and buckshot data in the manual, too.

I also bought BPI's Cheddite manual (3rd edition) and was very disappointed with the lack of "regular" wads in it. 12g, 2.75" lead loads, minimal Winchester, Remington, or ClayBuster wads if I recall. And if I'm mis-remembering, my apologies to BPI.
 
There's no data for Remington or Winchester wads in Cheddite hulls because tapered hull wads are unsuitable for straight walled hulls like Cheddite.

Remington and Winchester wads are liable to have powder migration leading to bloopers.
 
The biggest problem with BPI is their load data is always for their components and not anyone elses
I have the Buckshot manual and was equally disappointed in it
Some of the data seems questionable too and I have read on other forums that a lot of their loads are overpressured and unsafe so use BPI data at your own risk
 
wasa: The Lyman manual and online Hodgdon Data Center list loads for Cheddite hulls, that use tapered wads. As saskbooknut correctly points out though, powder migration can be an issue. The amount of migration dependent on powder density.

Have not experienced any serious issues in the past, using tapered wads in Cheddite hulls. They seemed to perform just fine. But, quit using them and now use the correctly fitting wads. Mostly to avoid any problems, altogether. Likewise, with Fiocchi and Federal hulls. The one exception being Federals's HOA hull, which is a tapered hull.

Bottom line: If tapered wads are all you have....it's okay to use them. Just be aware of some of the potential drawbacks.

Looking at the Lyman sabot slugs, the 5th edition, which I have, used the rem RXP20 with a 3in Fiocchi hull and WSF powder, any chance they have this powder/hull with a different wad as the RXP20 seems to be extinct now.

Trying to figure out if there is anything worthwhile in the Lyman slug section, the only reason for me to buy the manual.
 
My squad mates and I just ordered 1700 bucks in shotgun powder.
I always keep perusing the sites. Looking for new stuff (hopefull) and stock availability. The powder prices have increased twice, at our main suppliers in Canada since January !!

I was talking to Julie @ Humasson's when we placed the order, she said that the Canadian dollar tanking was the first increase this yr, THEN, ...Hodgdon's price also went up a short while ago, hence the second increase. That's not even counting what the orange man will do once his tariffs are set in place ! That was the main reason for the order now. Didn't really need it...but it won't go bad till I do !!
