Lyman Great Plains kit

I have a .54 GPR. Wasn't a kit, but just doing the work yourself would be fun. There isn't really anything too hard about it and are supposed to be pretty straight forward. .54 isn't a popular caliber any more so buying things for it like balls, cleaning attachments etc. may be difficult. Go to Track Of The Wolf website, you will find everything there. Learn to cast your own RB's. I still like the .54

I live in a small town so .54 components are not easy to find, even LeBaron in Montreal has none. That being said I would still get the .54 It is a very powerful punch and hey, you got bragging rights.

Good for anything in North America.............I put a 230 grain ball through a meat WT buck last fall ,center of heart at 90 yards and Stevie Wonder could have tracked him.The year before a meat mule buck through both shoulders ,ball recovered semi-flat 216 grains.Back in the smelting pot to be shot again......................Harold........100gr FFG

I built a .54 GPR kit two summers ago. I browned the steel,True-Oiled and hand-rubbed many coats of stock wax in. Still no kills with it as of yet but the 1:60 twist launches a 230gr patch & round ball with greta accuracy to 50, 75 & 100yds.
If you're ever in need accoutrements I buy from Track of the Wolf.

hello there, i have built the GPR flintlock kit a couple of years back and had no problems, even being a first time build. Used a cold bluing instead of browning though. I did find that the more i shot it the better it shot, seemed to like the break in in a way. But watch out,,building is addicting,, eventually ordered the parts from Track Of The Wolf and did one from scratch.
Have fun with it.

Would love to see pics of your "from scratch" bp gun.
And I agree, the more i shot the more accurate it became.
70grs Goex FFG
230gr cast rb,
Traditions lubed patch, all seated on top of a 28 gauge over powder card lubed with olive oil.
I use this load for general shooting out to 75yds and use a 100grs Goex out to 100yds when hunting.
50yds

Lyman Great Plains rifles sell so cheap at auction in the USA that it hardly is worth building one. The Kit price in Canada is gonna be 2-3x what you would pay for a NIB or exc condition example from the US. If you really want a kit the last one I saw (NIB) sold for 170USD.

IMHO build something you can't buy for less then the parts costs.

Any import regulations regarding this rifle?

And now probably a stupid question, I would like to know if great plains hunter replacement barrel in .50 will fit a Great plains rifle in .54?
