M-14 Clinic: 100 Mile House: Day 3 & 4

30 degrees the first day, between 30-35 degrees second day but at least there was a bit of a breeze on the second day. It certainly gave us pause to think how our CF guys do this in 40-50 degree heat with a lot more gear. Don't know how they do it and still function.

WOW glad you guys enjoyed your clinic and survived ... I for one could not work in that warmth. Cheers,

Ok here's my "take aways" from the clinic.....

I already had my rifle tuned and tweaked by the Doctor well before the clinic, so there wasn't too much more to do...(trimmed some springs, etc) Until I tried to break down the rifle and the trigger group would NOT come out! No way! But after handing it over to Thomas, his expert eye spotted the problem in seconds: a roll pin had walked out just a tiny bit, blocking the trigger guard "hinge" from swinging open. I doubt I would ever have figured out how to correct it but the Doc knew, and all was well again!
Then, I was able to pass this knowledge on to another shooter who had the exact same issue later in the day.

The weak point of my M14 was the irons, (I should say, me using irons) but I wasn't concerned since I was going with an aimpoint micro on an arms 18 mount. ..... That is, until I started to get stovepipes every time I mounted the aimpoint!
Off came the red dot, and now I had to go to irons! Luckily I changed over to Italian rear sights from Hungry.... And boy does he know how to use them!
I zeroed at 25, then re-zeroed the elevation knob for 300 yds, but i only had 1 click of "down" remaining. But how to shoot at a hundred with only 1click of adjustment? Hungry just said, if you shoot right on the bull, you'll print 5" high at 100.
Dammed if I wasn't! amazing! 6 o'clock hold got me on target.

P mags (I was shooting with my AR on day 4) are very reliable under stress. zero stoppages or feeding problems. All the ones I used were "5.5" mags.
LAR mags were not bad, but they did have some issues after being stressed and abused in the heat...... And from Hungry stomping on them every chance he got! Lol

I was awed by Billygoat's Isralie mag change demonstration! Wow!

What did you-all learn?

thank you again to all those who helped in putting on the event ( clinic just doesn't do it justice ) It would take me a week to type out all I learned. hope to see u all again at another one

2954.4 km round trip driving, forgot my water jug and lawn chair in BC and I got completely sun fxcked on Thursday. I would not hesitate to go back if there is a chance to do it again! It was great tweaking, shooting, hearing everyone's stories around the fire and I especially loved the food! Must buy i-snipe and a tac-latch now.

Thanks to all Thomas, Hungry, Nina, Rugerman, Tony and everyone who had a hand in the event...Just being being able to say I was there makes me think of the battle speech in Henry V: We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,

I'll paraphrase it to my purposes...
We few, we happy few, we band of M14 fans,
For he to-day that sweats his ass off with me at the 100 Mile House clinic
Shall be my brother; be he ever so verbally abused by Hungry;-)

Thanks all...it was an event that will exist for posterity!

You nailed it, Machman!

Huge thanks to all involved in making this happen, this event was unbelievable and is a real testament to the dedication, skills and passion of those who made it happen. I would do it again in a heart beat, mosquitoes and heat too!

Sums it up pretty damn good

That isreali mag change demo was billygoat, and man, you demo'd that like a true operator, so cool :D :D

Guys, I have been reviewing the hours, and hours of HD video from Jesse's camera and we have some truly epic footage. When I have it in DVD format I'll contact everyone and send out copies.
Thanx to all of you who have messaged me today, your words of appreciation mean a tonne.

What an epic event this was! Thanks to everyone who worked their asses off to make it happen.
I learned far more than I had expected. The fear of working on my rifle is now gone. Learning how to sight in at 25/300 was something I really needed. The drills were an experience not soon forgotten.
I made new friends and shot alongside a couple of old friends.
All in all, I am so glad I worked my life around making it out to this clinic.
My thanks go out to all who facilitated and all who participated!

John

Who invited the AR to this event.................? :p

Hungry did. He is spreading the gospel of SR and CQB. Wanted me and Popcan to be familiar with the drills we were doing with the M14 as well as the AR as that is what a lot of guys will be using here after he is gone.
I shot my M14 a lot on the first day and then was asked to switch. I think I would have preferred to continue with my M14 but you do what Hungry says. Really felt sorry for Popcan though as he had to drag a purse AND his little Swiss Arms around all day. He handled it well though. A real trooper. :nest:

Greetings all. I spent Friday stocking up on goodies in Prince George; today I had to get the wife's car running and out of the middle of the driveway where it died. That's what happens when you go away for so much fun.

Having read all the previous posts it's hard to say anything new. I have to thank Hungry for working so hard on his summer working vacation. Also thanks go to Thomas for imparting his M305 knowledge. Between you two guys this was definitely a steep learning curve, but a fun one. I feel that I took away so much knowledge we should call it M305 Immersion, sort of like French Immersion for school kids.

On the learning subject, the contributions of all the classmates was extremely valuable. I learned many great little tips and tricks from those with more and varied experiences. That is the real beauty of a clinic like this. Everyone contributes and shares to build the body of knowledge. I hope I helped add to this shared resource.

I can't say enough about how well Thomas and Nina, with some extra help, opened their house to roughly 20 extra bodies. The food was great and the coffee flowed. How many of us could take in 20 extra people in a house with one bathroom and shower?!!!

Thanks also go to Rugerman and Popcan who figured in making our range sessions a smooth, seamless event even if it was noisy and full of colourful language. I know from experience that when an event is pulled off without any cluster f23ks, there has usually been great planning behind it.

Finally thanks to all you guys for keeping your focus and getting us through the events safely while still having a blast. I hope to see you again sometime and we can always meet here.

Dude, I'd never even tried the mag change before. Now the worry is that you all think I'm a mirror-commando. Total beginner's luck.

That was the tac-latch you sold me a while back. Didn't even know why I needed it. You're selling, I'm buying. Like with Hungry on the range, what ever Thomas tells you to do to your rifle, just STFU and do it.

.

You could have fooled me... That was really slick. Too bad we didn't get that on video!

To be fair, I wasn't one of the organizers of this event - I just tried to help out where I could, cause I know how much work has to go into these things, having hosted Haggisfest twice a long time ago.....

(here's where you can see the video from haggisfest in case anyone wants to relive it:)

It was all the Doc, Hungry, and Rugerman.

We have 3 days of video footage , hours and hours.... And hours of High Definition M14 fun. Thursday the camera crew was unavaillable :(

Once Jesse gets back from his current contract filming with a group of WWII reinactors I hooked him up with for a film project he is co producing. He will be professionally editting a set of. DVD's for each person who paid clinic fees. An editted version of this set will be avillable after that, with some faces blurred, for the general masses to request a copy.
As the events principle organizer, I will not be posting anything to youtube without editting the faces of those folks who requested it.

I'll tell ya this much..... Previewing the data card thru my 55 inch HD TV is nothing short of spectacular.
Thanx Jesse and Kyle, awesome work boys!!
