M1 Carbine BBL change

I have universal M1 that I want to make no restricted.

Swapping out the bbl is this a Do at home thing or should I bring it to the smith?

Does a Universal use a standard M-1 barrel? Some Universals resemble M-1s, but have little in common with respect to parts interchangability.
You have to have a way of securely holding the barrel and receiver without damage. Slipping, twisting, crushing will do a lot of harm. I've never pulled a barrel on a Universal, but on others I've worked on, the barrels were not in particularly tight.

I'm thinking about it as well. The barrels on Tradex's site look like the groove the op rod rides in is absent and might need to be machined. I should send an email off......

These barrels are virtually identical to the USGI barrel, except that they are 18.750" long. All the grooves are as they should be, and the breech is skirted (short), which, from what I understand, many aftermarket M1 carbine barrels are not. I just installed one of these barrels on a long-ago bubba'ed USGI carbine, and everything fit as it should. Definitely one of the nicer aftermarket carbine barrels that I have seen.

The earlier Universals were compatible with USGI parts, but the later ones were not. If it has a stamped and welded slide, and two recoil springs, the USGI style barrels will not work.
Whether you do it yourself, or you have a smith do it, you will need a receiver wrench, or risk twisting or otherwise damaging the receiver. This is the wrench that I made up for working on my carbines:

I have the two springs. Can this be made to work wit it though?

No. You are stuck with the barrel that is on it. The only possibility of getting a non-restricted barrel for that Universal would be if someone was parting one out that had the longer barrel.

I'm coming to your house to use those tools!

Do you know if the trade ex barrels need the gas piston installed (or whatever its called) is that a simple drop in? or some more work required?

I got one of these barrels a couple weeks back.....they are nice. I am working all night, but will post a few pics tomorrow, for info purposes, of the gas block, keyseat for front site and the breech.

Yes - simple drop-in - you remove the gas piston and nut from the old barrel, and install them on the Trade-Ex barrel. A gas nut wrench is needed (or at least highly recommended) to do it properly.

speaking of universal M1s anyone know where I could get some recoil springs. I bought it a year or so ago it is in really nice shape with a 18.5 barrel, but sometimes it won't chamber a round right, kind of like it doesn't have enough force.

Make sure it's an early Universal before you spend any money. The late model's are junk. The cheap, poorly stamped op handles tend to break. Gunparts lists some parts for them though.

Thanks for the info, the one I have has 2 recoil springs I bought it for the barrel but the rest of the gun is in really nice shape and shoots quite well. One day I will get around to gettting another M-1 and rebarrel it.
