M1 Carbine questions

The early universals took usgi parts but the later ones don't if I remember correctly. You can tell by the op rod, they look and feel like cheap stamped units on the crappy universals, I had one in my hands once. It also had a platic or metal upper handguard.
I have a Inland carbine marked 9-44 on the barrel but someone cut the front sight guards off at some point. Other than that it's original, got it for $250 last year and it shoots great, what a blast :D
I bought a couple 5/15 mags from tradeex.
I don't use it often though as it's restricted and I can't carry it in the woods. When I bought it it was registered as unrestricted with an 18" barrel but they restricted it before doing the transfer :(

cutting off ther front sight guards was done alot in the field through NOT permittted, try shouldering and aiming fast at night MUCH easier without the 'ears" on the front sight

way over priced for a mismatch in the us yes ok but you cannot import it to the us

I got my last to origional all matching m1a1's for less then $500.00 each

Inland was the ONLY producer of paratroopers models

I would love to get the mitts on a true usgi m1 carbine... Anyone know anyone selling, or the general price for matching?

There is a 'selfish' member here who cornered the market & owns more than 30 real GI M1/M2 carbines. This may explain why you can't get your hand on one.

"...Universal M1 Carbines are not made to USGI specs..." There were two models. Early and Late. The Early models were made from milsurp parts and are ok. Not many of them around.
Then Universal thought they could improve the design. They didn't. The Late models are junk. A Late model has two return springs, a toggle for the bolt hold open and a really poorly made, stamped, op handle. Said op handles tend to break.
You don't see many carbines in shops anymore because they're restricted and you can't get an ATT, in most places, to shoot them. If you can get an ATT, the range has to be certified for restricted rifles.

M1 Carbines

The M1 carbine is not realley that rare of a bird up in the North, with a bit of patience you can generally find one, It took me about two years. The Calgary Gunshow in March, Easter Fri. weekend should have some available from private individuals or collectors available for sale, generally ranging from WW II manufacture spec. to bubba sporterized versions, which could be returned back to reasonable original military appearance. Prices can very from totally ridiculous to slightly above reasonable, they do show up. Don't waste your time with a Universal, they are not Mil-spec and have double return springs to operate the recoil mech as opposed to the true short stroke piston that Williams designed for the original M1. Universals are junk and if you don't wish to waste your money on junk buy an original for your investment. Irwin Pedersen's aren't bad and are close to spec., interchange with the G.I.one but still not an original. Be patient, go to your local shows, they do show up often enough. Cheers. G2

"...have double return springs to operate the recoil mech as opposed to the true short stroke piston..." Only the Late models have two return springs. The short stroke piston has nothing to do with the return spring. It's how the return spring(s) gets compressed in the first place.

Damm! I want one too!

I saw one at the last HACS show. It had a big sign on it saying "NOT FOR SALE"
So I didn't even ask.(

So? Want to sell me one? I'm kookoo for carbine puffs!

Sorry, meant to say Iver Johnson. Pedersen was an official G.I. M1 carbine contractor.g2.

irwin pedersen produced 2700 rifle of which NONE were accepted by the us government thier contract was pulled and given to saginaw gear S'G' who assembled the 2700 rifles and they were approved the IP rifles are VERY VERY rare if all orig and matching likely less then 100 remaining worldwide today I spent the last 15 years hunting them and now have several orig all matching IP carbines

where the paratrooper m1a1 carbine inland made 140,000 of them much less rare i also have several thgey are not that grate as shooters the stocks are by now not tight most have no leather left

I bought two M1 Carbines in the past year. The first is an H&S non restricted carbine with a whole mix match of usgi parts. No one has ever heard of an H&S so if anyone knows let me know as I am currious as all heck. I've put over 1000 rounds down the barrel and think this rifle shoots unbelievably well so whoever manufactured it did a great job.

The other is a Rockola M1 Carbine that I need to refinish the stock on someday. Somebody varnished it (ouch). It has the following parts:

Reciever: Rockola
Barrel: Rockola (back bored 1/4" but Excellent otherwise)
Front Sites RMC
Trigger BE-B
Hammer WU
Slide: C w/flaming bomb
Bolt W (or M upside down)
swivel: no markings
Rear Site: IRCO

I have no idea which parts are WWII vintage and which may have been thrown on later. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated as well.

M1 Carbines are the most fun you can have with clothes on (or off if you are into that sort of thing). From time to time they do come up on the EE so keep looking.

And now some picks....
