M1 Garand Rust from a friends newly aquired...

The barrel is pitted.
The op rod is rusted too.


He wants to know the cost to fix this (ie: new barrel, new receiver, new op rod).

In my opinion I would either use it as a shooter or save the good parts and build up a new one from the ashes.

You can get Italian receivers for around 60.00 in Canada. the rest of the parts you can pick up along the way.

Looking at the receiver in the pics, the pitting is really deep on the receiver legs and along the under edge where it meets the wood.

Lever and Marstar have cheap stripped receivers and barrels aren't that hard to find. If you got it really cheap, I'd keep it to build the parts onto a new rifle.
 
Yep I picked up a few of the stripped receivers myself.

The Italian stuff is a great deal and it is a lot of fun scouring the planet for parts. I have completed a few bare receiver builds then sent them down to Nick to parkerize.

I will snap and post a pic of a Beretta I just finished in a few.
