Currently building out a Garand from a mix of new and surplus parts. I'm planning on using a new Criterion .308 barrel which is built to USGI specs instead of the shorter Italian .308 barrels.

I just noticed the stock I have seems to be a bit short as there's about 7/8" gap from the tip of the stock ferrule cutout and the lower band:

This stock is 29" from the end of the buttstock plate cutout to the end of the stock ferrule cutout, whereas the USGI stocks should be 29 3/4" I believe.

I've heard there are ways to extend the stock (either with a wood extension or extended lower band). Does anybody have experience with extending the stock? Is it even worth it or should I look into finding the correct USGI stock instead?

It looks like you have one of the shorter Italian military stocks for their Tipo2 7.62 mm conversions which have a barrel .5 inch shorter than a standard .30-06 Garand. The stock, barrel, op rod, and rear handguard were all shortended for these conversions.

These are excellent stocks. Many were modified for surplus sale by adding an extension which was glued and pinned in place. You could find a used Garand stock and cut .5 inch off the end to do the same thing.

Decent garand stocks are hard to find, but many of these surplus modified stocks were brand new, unissued.

Thanks yeah I’m leaning towards attempting to lengthen the stock myself, mostly because this stock fits my receiver very well.

Will post an update if I’m successful!

you are right in line to have a picatinny scout mount slap right on there.... I went and put one on mine & have a second for the fiance's. I had to cut them down for my .308 garands but you on the other hand, will have them bolt on.

just a thought.

As always, CGN proves it has lots of opinions!

I sold all my Garand parts to non sponsor Nick at Vulcan near Windsor, Ontario. He does very good work on Garands. I suggest contacting him to ask if there is a chipped, split, and scrap Garand foreend in the pile that would be a donor piece. If not, scout for any walnut stock cutoff and as Tiriaq suggests, glue and pin a block in place. Get out your rasps and sandpaper!

Your scout rifle scope base is a good choice. If you can tolerate getting a heavy rifle on aim, that base should work well.
