M1 Garand

No such rule in the ON regulations.

2025 summary states "Under the Criminal Code of Canada you generally cannot possess any clip/magazine for a semi-automatic firearm which holds more than 5 shots of centre-fire ammunition". The Garand is specifically exempted, of course.

Shotguns are limited to 3 rounds, for all hunting, not just migratory birds.

We are talking hunting regs and CO's, so they tend to be much more practical than federal law and agents of the state. Make sure you only have 5 round clips on you when hunting and the CO will never bother asking about hypothetical 8 rounders that you have at home.

This is no different than hunting with a semi-auto rifle that takes box mags. If you only have 5 round mags with you they don't care if it can also accept 30 round mags. Or when bird hunting and the only thing limiting your tube mag to 2 rounds is an easily removable plug. As long as the plug is in place when the CO checks then you're fine, even if you could just remove it 5 minutes after he leaves.

I understand what you are trying to say and I only wanted to point out that a M1 Garand's magazine can take either a full 8 round En-bloc or a smaller altered 5 round one but the rifle and it's mag itself is capable of taking either.

Unlike a mag plug in a shotgun mag which requires a person to first disassemble the gun to remove, a 5 round clip slips quickly in or out without any disassembly involved.

And internal clips fed into a magazine are different creatures to a separate removable box magazine. Think of a 5 round en-bloc clip to a 5 round mag and a 8 round en-bloc to a ten round mag as a comparison.

Blocking a M1 Garand mag to only accept 5 round clips is very difficult and it is best to not have any normal 8 round clips on your person when out hunting with one.

And I guess most CO's are not experts on the wording of the law anyhow.
