M14//308 win/12 shotgun slugs not good for moose?

In my experience Moose are not very hardy and almost any standard deer hunting rifle with its heavier bullet will do...but also in my experience its usually two shots, one to put them down and then one more to kill them. Just my experience.

I have never hunted moose .but every deer u have shot with the 308 has been a complete pass threw with very large exit holes. So I can't see it being a problem with moose.

Every time someone brings up .308 on moose people recommend 180 gr.... which is fine of course, but 165 gr & 150 gr will do just fine as well with the usual proper placement & bullet choice.

The .308 is just fine for moose.

The M14 is a little heavy and clunky, but will work just fine.

^This.

I might have described it less charitably...I would probably say "The M14 is a fat, heavy, noisy, clunky pig of a rifle, but it will work just fine."

Tomato, tomahto...:)

Shot over 20 moose with my 308, never lost a moose. All fell within 10 ft. Just because I like my new rifle I now use a 338/06. It drops they just the same. Shot placement is the answer.

I have hunted a lot of moose .. but never in thick cover so too speak .. I have hunted from long-Lac too Ignace and some in Armstrong.. A 308 will kill moose for sure .. But here is my take .. In my case anyway I am looking at a 15-20 hour drive one way depending on where you are going .. if all you own is a 308 .. then I guess that is all you have .. But if given the choice of taking more gun I would say bring the biggest gun you can shoot comfortably .. The cuts up north are so big it would be impossible too have a gun that was capable of shooting those cuts .. So I would say bring the gun with the most legs you own .. If you do not own a gun with legs and killing power borrow one .... I saw a moose shot that was standing in some popular trees ,, the guy aimed for the front shoulder and shot through a four inch tree and killed the moose ,, He was using a 338 ... A 308 might have done it too .. But why limit your self You have too buy gas too get there .. there is nothing you can do about that .. you have too buy food and again there is not much you can do about that either .. But you can chose what gun you use ... 30-30 has killed a pile of moose too .. but I doubt years ago they had cuts that was miles long .. and just because a 30-30 will kill a moose does not make it as good as a more powerful rifle .. If a 300 win mag is only 500 feet faster than a 308 that is 500 feet faster and may make a difference between a dead moose right there and a moose you have too recover from a #### hole

My grandfather used to kill moose regularly with his .351 Winchester Self-Loader which is similar ballistically quite similar to a 357 Magnum round.

The 308 will kill a moose no problem as long as the shot is placed in the boiler room. I've seen many fall to 308, 270, 30-06, 303, hell even 30-30 levers. The howitzers aren't needed to take them down as generally you are going to find them at relatively close ranges.

I think the best question is ""WHY '' would you use a 308 or similar gun when there is far better out there .. yuor grandfather used a 351 .. Mine used a 56-50 spencer .. which is a rim rire .. A glorified over size 22 .. I am sure there is better choices in this day .. I seen a moose shot with a 44-40 .. It was a calf and shot in the neck .. It fell right where the guy shot it .. but the bullet was just two inches in the neck .. Not enough gun in my opinion.. If he had shot that moose in the body it most likely would have died some where .. but not any where near where it was shot

I'm inclined to agree with you Mike. There are many choices that will do, but there are certainly those that will work better than others. That being said, I don't feel the .308 Winchester is undergunned when up against moose, especially when paired with appropriate ammunition and shooting conditions. To me it is more about confidence and training with the rifle you intend to use. If you can shoot a .308 chambered rifle better than you can shoot a 300 Win Mag rifle, then the 308 would be the way to go. If the OP can shoot their M-14 with enough precision and consistency to ensure good shot placement and exercises good judgement as to what ranges they can shoot at, they shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I'm in complete agreement with Mike on this also. A .308 is adequate...many other cartridges are better than merely adequate. Sadly, threads like this on CGN normally devolve into a contest to see who can use the smallest possible cartridge to hunt the quarry in question. We will invariably hear about the father who killed that critter using a mere BB gun...and then the next poster relates how his grandfather killed one every year for 72 years using a slingshot.

Guess what? If we go far enough back, we can always find an instance of using ordnance that is sub-standard by today's standards...but that's what they had back then, so that's what they used. They wounded and lost a lot of critters, and they often had many more opportunities than today's hunter so they just moved on to the next one...but all we hear about is the successes.

I can almost hear my father's voice now from the distant past: "Well, if all your friends jump off a bridge, are you going to do that too?" Damn...where's the Cranky Ukrainian emoji when you need it? :)

As usual , the thread turns into the smallest and biggest debate . The OP simply asked if a 308 is adequate for Moose , not if a 300 , 338 , 7mm Mag is better . Simple answer , yes it will cleanly take a Moose . I used all of the above for Moose , great cartridges . Some people don't like the recoil of the larger cases , or in the Proud Phoenicians case , that's what he has . Fill your boots brother , the 308 is fine .
