I was going to try and message m14doctor directly but he doesn't accept privet messages. Probably because he would be inundated with 1000 or so. So its now opened to all

I was debating doing a m14 build starting with a Norinco m14 and debating if it makes more sense to use just a receiver or to start or is it better to just buy a whole gun.

Also I'm reading in the recent marstar thread about their latest shipments. Apparently there have been problems with the 18.5 barrels versions. Barrels flying off one blowing up etc.

I was thinking of building a Non restricted CQB. Use a troy or blackfeather stock, muzzle break etc.

Is it practical to use a 22 in barrel for this? I've heard there are other benefits from chopping the barrel, threading it etc...

opinions?

I wish I bought at 22" barrel just for the reason of cut, crowning, and threading it. I own a blackfeather and find it very ergonomic. I'd personally buy the whole rifle because then you can slowly build it and still be able to shoot it instead of waiting on all the parts. I also like having a forged steel oprod.. Just my $0.02.

Opinion...yes there were maybe half a dozen m305 that have had some kind of major mechanical failures. Not all failures have been proven to be manufacturing defects yet.

My suggestion is to buy from a store that warranties what they sell and have a competent smith check it out.

There are many shorties with hundreds of rounds through them out there with no problems what so ever.

I have only shot shorties and would not hesitate to buy another. The only thing I would check for is headspace.

I'll post a pic of my cqb rifle tomorrow.

M14doctor the business is no more, I (m14doc) , have retired ;)
That said, I'm always availlable for questions.
If you want a solid foundation to build up a rifle on, check out my add in parts n bits :D

Still have to figure out sights and test the muzzle break my friend made.

I think I may go with a low power scope.

I also need to upgrade the stock/pistol grip. With a scope you need a cheek riser.

I prefer the lighter Blackfeather "RS" for short barreled M14s.
18.50" barrels are more rigid, and less whippy than the standard 22".

My 16.25" M14. Pictured with an Aimpoint, but low power glass is coming soon.

"...I mean replica..." No you don't. Replicas are evil.
"...debating doing a M-14 build..." What are you planning on using it for? Decide that then figure out what you need to build it. Suspect you'll prefer buying a whole rifle just for the receiver. Unless you want to spend a huge pile of money. Enterprise, Stateside, for example, wants $1199 US for one.
"...the 18.5 barrels versions..." Short barrels are marketing things with far more cons than pros. Biggest con being the loss of velocity.

Here's where I disagree with sunray 100% LOL at least the last part.

On an open battlefield I would certainly opt for a full length M14.
In an urban environment ... or in jungle warfare... An 18.5 hands down.
But seen as none of us will see a battlefield with our rifles in hand, for average joe who wants an accurate rifle for range, hunting ect, I think the 18.5" is the evolution of compromise for this platform.
The velocity loss going from 22" to 18.5 is neglegable and can easily be compensated for with the adjustment of sights or optic.
No, I would not expect a 18.5" m14 to be competeing at 1000 Meters , but out to 600, no worries with the right man on the trigger

This ones mine in a blackfeather chassis. If you mount a scope, I'd recommend the Magpul PRS, I find it very versatile as far and using a scope. Also find the Hogue pistol grip very comfortable as well.

I am excited to see how far I can take your build 45ACP. I am excited to get that thing together and stretch its legs. Do some hand loading and see what I can get out of it.

Gents

If I may contribute....

This is the CQB or Patrol rifle build I did.......and then in a fit of stupidity traded off

Specs include:

  • M305 - 18.6"
  • Black feather Chassis FDE
  • CASM optics mount - FDE
  • Handguard painted to match
  • Black Arrow Spring Guide
  • Hungry Tuned Trigger group (ever so sweet!!)
  • Magpul MIAD FDE with B1 back strap
  • Magpul UBR (FDE - with side pannels removed)
  • Springfield Armoury M1A Muzzle break
  • Sadlak M14 Mag Release Latch (Foreign 4mm Pin)
  • SEI M14 Extended Bolt Stop/Release

The plan before she left me was to mount a Vortex PST 1-4 MOA reticule and turrets. I think its a good balance in optic's with out breaking the bank.

I Still have a DMR stlye, but I am contemplating having it cut down to do something similar to the above.

Decisions, decision, ah well time will tell

regards and all the best
